Overview
This module aims to develop the students self-awareness to apply appropriate standards of professionalism, communication and reflection to their behaviour and performance. Students will learn to effectively manage their own time and resources and will use their own reflections on practice to support their continued development as part of their personal development plan.
The module aims to further develop the students understanding of the importance of communication within the primary care dental team and also the extended health care team.
Students will develop insight, resilience, accountability, and leadership and management skills and learn to apply the concept and practice of professionalism within the extended dental team and other healthcare professions in the primary and secondary care environments.
The module content includes:
•Ethics, legal and regulatory frameworks •Diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination •Social accountability •Candour, complaints and communication •Well-being and self-care •Personal and professional behaviour •Resilience, leadership and management •Health and Safety and Clinical Governance
Assessment Strategy
This module is assessed through formative and summative assessments including formal meetings with personal tutors/academic advisors, completion of a clinical audit
The module is assessed using a percentage grade scale with the minimum threshold being 40%. Standard setting is employed in this module.
Learning Outcomes
- Accurately assess and reflect on your own capabilities and limitations in the interest of high quality patient care and utilise the receipt of effective feedback in the professional development of self, taking into account self-care and well-being and raise concerns where appropriate about your own or others’ health, behaviour or professional performance.
- Communicate appropriately and engage in professional discussions with colleagues, recognising the wider contribution of other sectors within the healthcare profession. Act with integrity and ensure your actions maintain the trust of colleagues, patients and the public in you, your team, and the profession across all environments and media.
- Critically analyse and synthesise national and local clinical governance and health and safety requirements, working in partnership with colleagues to develop and maintain an effective and supportive environment which promotes the safety and wellbeing of the patient and dental team. Describe how to take responsibility for the quality of services and devices provided to the patient as relevant to your scope of practice.
- Demonstrate knowledge of diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination and the underpinning legislation and explain how to apply these principles to manage patients with protected characteristics and work within the dental team. Proactively address discriminatory language, behaviour and microaggressions from colleagues, patients and other professionals.
