Overview
This course is part of a series of modules (also including PPT-4004 and PPT-4005) with the ultimate aim to develop and enhance teaching skills, understanding of issues within teaching in Higher Education, and the mechanisms involved in running and developing Human Sciences courses in Higher Education. Students will be expected to work as a member of a teaching team to complete their Teaching Practice.
These courses are predominately focused on the practice of teaching, rather than pedagogical theory. The aim of the course is to help students become a competent and adaptable teaching practitioner, able to facilitate and support student learning. Moreover, they will gain some insight and experience of the ‘hidden’ mechanisms of teaching in Higher Education (e.g., quality assurance, moderation etc). They will find these skills invaluable for their future academic development and employability.

Assessment Strategy
Fail - Incomplete portfolio with either missing components or lack of detail to adequately support included components. Lack of evidence of knowledge of teaching in Higher Education. Poor evidence provided for independently created teaching resources. Poorly structured with technical errors in written expression. Lack of depth of insight into teaching skills with no clear reflection on own capabilities.
Pass - Complete portfolio with detailed evidence included for all required components. Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of teaching in Higher Education. Clear evidence of independent creation of teaching resources. Well-structured and well-written with depth of insight into teaching skills with honest reflection on own capabilities.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply appropriate core knowledge and understanding of theories and approaches to effective teaching and learning practice and its critical evaluation (K1, K2, K3).
- Apply effective and inclusive approaches to assessment by designing assessments and/or by supporting learning for assessments, and by grading work and providing feedback to students (A3, A4, K1, K2).
- Critically evaluate effectiveness in interacting inclusively and respectfully with individuals or groups of students to provide a positive educational experience (V1, K3).
- Develop and/or deliver effective and inclusive high-quality class materials and content (A1, A2).
- Develop your approach to effective practice through application of critical reflection, use of pedagogical research and scholarship, and engagement with effective and inclusive continuous professional development (A5, K3, V3).

Description
The Portfolio, which is graded as pass/fail will enable the student to evidence the breadth of their teaching and/or learning support experiences in higher education and will provide an opportunity for students to reflect upon and critically evaluate their experiences of teaching, CPD, and working with others to produce observations of practice. The Portfolio will enable students to present their experiences in the context of some of the Dimensions of Advance HE's PSF 2023. The Portfolio will include the following components: 1. A Teaching Philosophy which provides an evidence-based reflection on the development of the student’s effective and inclusive practice as a practitioner in higher education. This component of the Portfolio will be no longer than 1000-words and is weighted as 25% of the Portfolio. 2. The inclusion of both reflections and all observation forms from PPT-4004 and PPT-4005, weighted as 5% of the Portfolio. These may be included as a clearly signposted appendix if preferred. 3. Five pieces of evidence of engagement with teaching and learning. Each piece of evidence must be accompanied by a reflection which critically evaluates the development of the evidence and its effectiveness. The maximum word-count for all five reflections is 1500-words and is weighted as 50% of the Portfolio. Resources which form the basis of the evidence may be included (i.e. seminar materials) and there is no word count for these resources – the resources may be included as a well-signposted appendix if preferred. 4. A 350-word reflection on engagement with CPD workshops and how the sessions influenced/will influence practice, weighted as 5% of the Portfolio. 5. A 150-word CPD Plan in which students will consider how they will seek tangible future opportunities for professional development, which will build on the skills they have already gained, weighted as 5% of the Portfolio. 6. Students will embed appropriate dimensions of the PSF throughout their Portfolio and they will produce a PSF map to cross-reference how those dimensions have been evidenced and where they appear within the Portfolio, weighted as 5% of the Portfolio. 7. The inclusion of at least one formal letter of reference from a professional familiar with the teaching and learning practices of the student. This component of the Portfolio is weighted as 5%, and may additionally include testimonials from students, teaching and learning award nominations, and other recommendation letters.
