Overview
In Phase 2 of the National EdD (Wales), you will undertake research and thesis writing. This will require you to develop a research plan, consider and implement methodological and ethical implications, gather and analyse data and develop a set of recommendations and conclusions for the research. It is important to note that you will need to take responsibility for your own learning and development.
Students will be expected to focus empirical work broadly within their own organisational or professional context. However, professional understanding, while important, will not be as pivotal as acquired research knowledge and expertise gained within the National EdD (Wales).
Early supervisory meetings in Phase 2 will be important to discuss the project details and plans, and any training needs students might have. This is to ensure students reach their potential as an independent researcher and ensure project completion. There is also an expectation that students attend national sessions at specific points.
Assessment Strategy
Students will undertake a review with their supervisors at one month into Phase 2 of the National EdD to discuss and confirm their objectives for the next five months and assess training needs to support the achievement of these. This will be followed by an annual progression review at six months, during which students will need to demonstrate progress relating to the following elements:
(i) Their work against the objectives set during the commencement meeting; (ii) The development of a programme of work towards addressing level 8 criteria; (iii) The potential objective(s) for the remainder of the programme and those that will be addressed in the next six months; (iv) A justified and detailed plan of work to address the objectives, with deadlines provided against each identified step; (v) The training requirements to support appropriate progress; (vi) Ethical considerations, mitigations, and a deadline for ethical approval application.
Learning Outcomes
- Create and generate new knowledge, through original research that is deemed by examiners to be at the forefront of practice and their academic discipline, merits publication, and adds value to the chosen field of study.
- Reflect critically in relation to the work completed and provide a scholarly contribution that is recognised at level 8 and is a significant piece of coherent, empirically based, scholarly work.
- Systematically acquire and understand a substantial body of knowledge that is at the forefront of their chosen area of study and within a recognised academic discipline.
