Overall aims and purpose
This module aims to develop the practical and co-ordinating skills needed by managers. This will include working in groups, with a focus on time management, organising and conducting meetings and other forms of communication, together with co-ordinating management functions and tasks.
The module will involve a field trip to a professional football club, where students will be working in groups on various tasks and management scenarios. Students will be required to make a financial contribution to the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence of the field trip.
The number of registrations for this module is limited.
Topics may include but will not be limited to: A crisis management scenario, completed over the course of a two-day field trip, where students will be required to prepare an appropriate response to a series of simulated events that unfold over the course of a match day Development of a proposal for an affinity product partnership, linking the football club's brand to the marketing of another product.
D- to D+ (40-49%): No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.
B- to B+ (60-69%): Very good performance Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
A- to A+ (70%+): Outstanding performance. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
C- to C+
C- to C+ (50-59%): Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed. Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
Demonstrate teamwork and presentational skills in a simulated environment under time pressure, and communicate and interact with non-academic professionals.
Understand the issues involved in solving complex problems facing organisations.
Participate in a management process in a simulated situation, and demonstrate experience of functional areas such as customer and media relations.
Apply theories and techniques covered in other modules, facilitating integration of studies across a range of functional areas of management.

Crisis management exercise where students formulate an appropriate response to a simulated crisis situation arising in a football club setting
The Business Plan exercise will be circulated during the field trip after which students, working in groups, will then discuss their approach to the situation before preparing a formal presentation of their strategy.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Lectures for introductory briefing and scene-setting (prior to field trip).
Field trip (2 days + travel = 3 days total).
Preparing through group discussion and individual research for business plan presentation, and the completion of written reports following the field trip.
