Overall aims and purpose

The purpose of this module is to examine leadership and the innovations and issues in the field of contemporary human resource management (HRM). This second year module provides a specialist focus on how people are led, managed and developed in the global workplace. The key aims are to study the key theories, concepts and models that underpin positive leadership impact and to develop an understanding of the complex issues facing human resource (HR) specialists and line managers in meeting their responsibilities for selecting, deploying, training, appraising, rewarding, relating to, retaining and sometimes releasing human resources.

Course content

Topics may include but will not be limited to: Development of the HR function; Strategic HRM; Human resourcing: human resource planning, recruitment and selection; Human Resource Development: facilitating learning and talent management; Reward and performance management; The employment relationship: grievance & discipline, managing diversity, health & well-being, employee engagement; Integrating HRM: HR as a profession, HR in crisis, manager roles in HR practice; Globalisation and international HRM. Leadership/management development; Concepts of leadership How leaders impact on others, emotional and social intelligence, building and motivating teams, inclusivity and cross cultural leadership, and building resilience for change and transitions

Assessment Criteria

C- to C+

C- to C+ (C- to C+ / 50-59%) Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed. Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.

threshold (D- to D+ / 40-49%) No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.

(A- to A* / 70+%) An outstanding performance, exceptionally able. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements. Learning outcomes

  1. Explain the contribution of the HR function to corporate strategy in a global context.

  2. Analyse the link between rewards, motivation and performance, explaining different types of benefits and why they might be used.

  3. Critically reflect on implications of HR theories for personal learning and employability

  4. Evaluate well known figures (Churchill, Jobs, Gates, Mandela etc.) as leaders and assess their relevance as role models for modern business managers

  5. Be able to discuss the changing employment relationship, including managing diversity, health and well-being and employee engagement.

  6. Deepen learning: broaden perspectives and forge connections between theory, policy and practice.

  7. Assess activities involved in developing human resources and facilitating learning.

  8. Discuss the processes of recruitment, assessment and selection.

  9. Evaluate the main concepts and literature on Leadership including change management
