Overall aims and purpose

  1. To increase competence in listening and speaking Spanish in a variety of communicative contexts and stlistic varieties.
  2. To increase the students' ability to apply different linguistic and communicative styles with an advanced level of competence.

Students on this module will be working towards achieving B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Course content

This topic-based module is the oral complement to LZS1001. It is a double module which aims to develop proficiency in spoken Spanish acquired at 'A' level. A range of audio and visual aids are used in each class in order to stimulate group discussions, debates and individual presentations on a particular theme. Aural skills are also developed through audio and video comprehension exercises. The purpose of this module is to enable students to defend themselves orally in a range of topics relating to contemporary Hispanic life and society and to improve comprehension of regional Spanish accents.

Assessment Criteria

threshold

40-49%: Basic grasp of Spanish pronunciation; basic understanding of aural material in Spanish. Limited ability to converse freely in Spanish and respond to spoken material; limited ability to deliver a presentation in Spanish.

good

50-69%: Good grasp of Spanish pronunciation; good understanding of aural material in Spanish. Some ability to converse freely in Spanish and respond to spoken material; ability to deliver a presentation in Spanish.

excellent

70+%: Excellent grasp of Spanish pronunciation; excellent understanding of aural material in Spanish. Clear ability to converse freely in Spanish and respond to spoken material; clear ability to deliver a presentation in Spanish.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss and defend a given topic as part of a team or individually.

  2. Demonstrate an ability to extract and compile information presented in audio and video comprehension classes.

  3. Incorporate new vocabulary and key expressions into oral work.

  4. Develop an understanding of a specific topic relating to Hispanic culture and society.
