Overall aims and purpose

To introduce the student to information systems (IS) and information technologies (IT) and their use in the business environment. Students are introduced to a broad range of topics – including IT for IS in general, a detailed case study, business functions, and the business use of IS.

Course content

  • Introduction to Information System (IS) – What are information systems, what do they do, what are they are for.

  • A detailed case study – study the departmental structure of a large company, and its Information Technology (IT) infrastructure.

  • Business activity – study the diverse activities necessary to make the organisation function (Marketing, Purchasing, Finance, Personnel, Innovation, IS and IT).

  • IS Infrastructure – Examples of information systems to support the core business activities of an organisation.

  • Data vs Information – difference between data and information, value of information.

  • EDI – e-Commerce technologies.

  • Computer systems – Processor, Control Console, Peripherals, serial files, index sequential files.

Understand what information systems are, outline the topics included in the study of IS, describe the role of IS and IT within an organization, illustrates the complexity of IS in a large organisation using a case study.

Know the role of IS and IT within an organisation. Can describe what are the main parts of an information systems Understand the complexity of IS in a large organisation.

Understand the organisational context related to IS, e.g. businesses, public sector organisations and non-governmental organisations.

Understand the IS business environment model, including the notion of supply chain. Know the diverse activities necessary to make the organisation function. Can define the core principles of each activity.

Explain the business use of IS in detail. Overall impression of the scope, nature and importance of IS and IT. Provide a number of examples.

Have notions of the complexity of IS Infrastructure. Can model how business processes translate into IS. Can explain the differences between data and information in the context of a given example.

Look at the information technology that the information systems run on

Understand the differences between various computer systems. Can select the most appropriate file architecture depending on a given dataset. Can explain the paradigm of EDI.
