Overall aims and purpose
The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to business, management and organisations. Organisations are key to the way in which we organise society, and a study of organisations is central to developing an understanding not only of business and management, but of many other aspects of our lives. The course explores the context of business, the organisation of work and nature of management.
Topics may include but will not be limited to:
Explaining Organisational Behaviour, The Business Environment, Organisational Culture, Personality, Employability Skills, Enterpreneurship and Corporate entrepreneurshp/Intrapreneurship, Learning and innovation in organisations, Motivation, Technology, Communication, Group Structure and Individuals in Groups, Teamworking, Elements of Structure, Organisation Design, Organisational Architecture and Strategy, Leadership, Change and Conflict.
Good: B- to B+ - As above, combined with the ability to analyse how and why different management theories have emerged, and analyse the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to organising and managing.
Excellent: A- to A* - As above, with the ability to critically evaluate the literature discussed, and apply to practical examples, eg identify causes of tensions within organisations and consider the implications for managers.
C- to C+
Another level: C- to C+ As threshold but with a greater demonstration of understanding the management process and its application
Threshold: D- to D+ – Can explain the evolution and contexts of management, for example. Demonstrates a basic understanding of the range of management theories and issues, such as the changing nature of work.
Relate theories of management to their experience of a working environment
Discuss the theory and practice of management in a contemporary context
Understand the changing complex nature of an organisations external environment and how it affects management processes
Describe the importance of understanding organisational behaviour and its implications for business practice.
|ESSAY||Essay question for students||
An assignment question which will involve a discussion of theory and provide examples of practice.
The exam will consist of essay based questions, they will assess the students' knowledge of management theories in the context of organisational behaviour and will require some knowledge of application.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
1 X Two hour lecture every week across semester 1 and semester 2
Guided study (reading material, self-completion questionnaires, case studies)
- Literacy - Proficiency in reading and writing through a variety of media
- Self-Management - Able to work unsupervised in an efficient, punctual and structured manner. To examine the outcomes of tasks and events, and judge levels of quality and importance

- Inter-personal - Able to question, actively listen, examine given answers and interact sensitevely with others
- Critical analysis & Problem Solving - Able to deconstruct and analyse problems or complex situations. To find solutions to problems through analyses and exploration of all possibilities using appropriate methods, rescources and creativity.
- Teamwork - Able to constructively cooperate with others on a common task, and/or be part of a day-to-day working team
- Management - Able to utilise, coordinate and control resources (human, physical and/or financial)
- Argument - Able to put forward, debate and justify an opinion or a course of action, with an individual or in a wider group setting
- Self-awareness & Reflectivity - Having an awareness of your own strengths, weaknesses, aims and objectives. Able to regularly review, evaluate and reflect upon the performance of yourself and others
Subject specific skills
- Problem solving and critical analysis: analysing facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions.
- Commercial acumen: based on an awareness of the key drivers for business success, causes of failure and the importance of providing customer satisfaction and building customer loyalty.
- Innovation, creativity and enterprise: the ability to act entrepreneurially to generate, develop and communicate ideas, manage and exploit intellectual property, gain support, and deliver successful outcomes.
- Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
