Overall aims and purpose

To describe and assess the emergence and evolution of the modern day multinational, multidivisional business enterprise (MNC) in Britain in the context of globalisation, its relation with the state and its interaction with other organisational forms (namely family firms and mutuals). An important part of the course will involve examining and reflecting upon mutiple points of view regarding diverse topics.

Course content

Globalisation and its discontent; Engines of growth; Business and the state; Big Business; The Chandlerian firm; Business groups, mutuals and co-operatives; Technology and the digital economy; Business and business schools; Excellent firms - a longitudinal analysis (Presentations).

Assessment Criteria


Satisfactory standard: 40-40% No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills; Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements; Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.


Average standard: 50-59% Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed; Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements; Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives; Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.

High standard: 60-69% Very good performance; Most of the relevant information accurately deployed; Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements; Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.


Excellent Standard 70+ An outstanding performance, exceptionally able; The relevant information accurately deployed; Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements; Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives; Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.

Learning outcomes

  1. Ascertain the process of globalization from the perspective of the enterprise.

  2. Recognise the large number of cultural, political, social and economic factors relevant to explaining how business organisations have evolved.

  3. Apply concepts, theories, tools and frameworks of business history to other studies within management.

  4. Know significant facts, events and developments relevant to business and managers who work in an international setting.

  5. Understand the complexity that is involved in longitudinal studies of business organisations.
