- JXH-1018: Sports Sci career studies (10) (Semester 1) By examining a number of contemporary issues, students will learn how to identify and respond to the moral, ethical, legal and health and safety considerations that underpin best practice in the sports and exercise domain. Issues such as the use of drugs in sport, competition, child protection and safety policies will be analysed. Students will discuss how professionals and performers might meet their legal, moral and ethical responsibilities in the issues under consideration and what the different consequences might be if these obligations are or are not met.
- JXH-1020: Biomechanics (10) (Semester 2) In this module you will be introduced to fundamental aspects of biomechanics as applied to sport and exercise. As a results the following concepts and issues will be covered: • Definitions of biomechanics units of measurement • Vectors • Linear and Angular Kinetics and Kinematics • Laws of Motion • Projectiles • Work, Power, Energy • Introduction to motion analysis • Application of biomechanics in sports and exercise. The module will consist of 11 lectures and 1 laboratory practical session, and optional seminar/enhancement classes.
- JXH-1028: Physical Activity & Health (10) (Semester 2) This module will examine a variety of factors that relate to physcial activity and health which will be expanded upon in subsequent years of study. The broad aims of the module are: 1. To understand the relationship between regular physical activity and health outcomes. 2. To understand the differences in the effects of physical activity on fitness across age, gender and different population groups. 3. To examine physical activity patterns, determinants of exercise behaviour and barriers to exercise. 4. To be aware of the major principals behind physical activity, health promotion and adherence to exercise.
- JXH-1040: Introduction Applied SS (10) (Semester 1) This module provides students with an introduction to aspects of sports science which are relevant to National Governing Bodies' coaching qualifications. Module content will include reflective practice skills and core aspects of sports science of relevance to the coaching of sport skills. That is, applied elements of sprots psychology (e.g., motivation and goal setting), permormance physiology (e.g., training and dietary planning), and skill acquisition (e.g., feedback) will be covered. Lectures will introduce and develop students' understanding of theoretical concepts whereas seminar/practical sessions will help to transfer this knowledge into the practical sports coaching domain. In order to foster a deeper level of understanding of the material covered in the module you will be allocated into groups in the first lecture. Your group will focus on one specific sport and the coaching requirements /demands of that specific sport. Wherever possible each lecture will contain opportunities to discuss the content of the lecture in the context of your specific sport. There will also be occasional homework assignments to complete within your group. In the penultimate week of the semester you will be asked to prepare a ten minute group presentation on a coaching plan for your sport that makes reference to applied principles of sport psychology and skill acquisition. The group presentation will be worth 60% of your final mark.or

- JXH-2022: Psychology of Sport Perf (10) This module we will consider factors that may affect sport performance and how these may be assessed. Lectures, with small group work will form the basis for the module. Theoretical content will be presented and discussed along with the practical significance of specific theories for performacne enhancement. Group work will be used in a variety of ways including problem solving in relation to set scenarios and solution generation. Regular use of the module's Blackboard site (e.g., MCQs, reading) will be advantageous to effective learning as would consistent lecture attendance. Lectures will be on Tuesday 9 - 11am in the Main Hall except week 2 (see schedule). Lectures start Tuesday 27th September. They will normally last approx. one and a half hours. In order to foster a deeper level of understanding of the material covered in the module you will be asked to submit personal reflections related to the topics covered within the module. Each of the 3 reflections should be no more than one page (approx. 300 words) and include references (and a bibliography on a separate page). Reflections are to be submitted by noon one week following the completion of the respective topics. For the specific topics and deadlines please refer to the table at the end of this outline. A personal reflection should express your ideas and thoughts relevant to the topic under consideration. That is, you should include information dealing with: (a) whether your own experiences with the topic are inline with theory/research, (b) if they are not in agreement with theory/research, (b) if they are not in agreement with theory/research, how so and/or why?, (c) is the topic even applicable to your (sporting) life?, (d) if not, why not?, (e) are there any issues/points raised that you can make use of in the future? and (f) any interesting/eye-opening/doubtful issues/points raised? Each reflection will be no more than one page double line spaced (font size 12) of written text with an accompanying reference section (refer to your Student Handbook concerning correct reference style). A title for each reflection should inform the reader of the topic reflected upon. Given the limited space for your reflections it may help not to attempt to reflect, at a more general level, on overall topics (e.g., anxiety) but rather, at a much more specific level (e.g., catastrophic drops in performance, MAT's predictions for cognitive anxiety), as this will provide you with much greater focus.

- JXH-2030: Research Expedition (20) This module forms an essential part of the Sport Science (Outdooor Activities) degree, providing an opportunity for students to put into practice scientific knowledge, outdoor activity skills and life skills gained in other parts of the course. Following preparation workshops, students will complete a mountain and/or water based journey in a wilderness environment. During the journey students will have to complete problem solving tasks and have to both run and take part in field-based scientific data collection activities. The scientific topics will highlight the multi-stressor environment typically experienced on expeditions, including issues related to high energy expenditure, fluid and enery balance, thermoregulation and cold injury, musculoskeletal injuries, compromised immune function, sleep deprivation, plus group dynamic and leadership issues.

- JXH-2020: Motor Control & Learning (10) (Semester 1) The purpose of the module is to provide students with an understanding of the processes undelying the control and learning of human movement from a behavioural perspective. This module will cover research and theoretical issues on various topics in motor control and learning such as information processing and factors affecting reaction time; attention and movement control; central and sensory contributions in motor control; multi-limb coordination; stages of learning; organization of practice sessions; and the frequency and form of augmented feedback. The application of research findings and theoretical constructs to practical situations will be discussed.
- JXH-2027: Sport Nutrition (10) (Semester 2) This module will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role that nutrition plays in sports performance. This will include nutrition and digestion - covering the major macro and micronutrients; specific nutritional demands of the exercising individual including the role of carbohydrate and fluid availability; the effect of various dietary strategies on energy metabolism and exercise performance; practical nutrional advice for pre-event, during event and recovery; nutrional ergogenic aids, 'do any work?' to include creatine, carnitine, medium chain triglycerides, caffeine, vitamin supplements and glutamine; dietary practices of elite performers ' mars bars and coke?'; use of dietary analysis, weighted food intake. Learning outcomes: students who successfully complete this module will be able to: utilise and apply previously acquired biochemical and physiological knowledge to understand digestion of macro/micro nutrients and their fate in energy metabolism; demonstrate a clear understanding on how diet influences sports performance and how different events have different nutritional demands; understand the specific role of carbohydrate and fluid availability in endurance performance; determinte the effects of ergogenic aids on sports performance and their efficacy; demonstrate a clear understanding of the appropriate use of dietary analysis with sports performers.

- JXH-3039: Environmental Physiology (10) This module aims to develop students¿ understanding of the effect of environmental extremes on the physiological responses to exercise and the effects of environmental extremes on exercise performance. The module will focus particularly on physiological responses to exercise performed in hot, cold, deep sea and microgravity (space flight) conditions.

- JXH-3055: Biochemistry of Exercise (10) (Semester 1) This course will introduce into Biochemistry and especially in metabolic pathways and their interaction in different tissues with focus on exercise response. Knowledge will be provided on how metabolism is regulated on the cellular and systemic levels. Students will learn how nutrition and exercise will impact metabolism acutely and chronically. Connection between metabolic processes and health and training outcomes will be addressed. This module is important for all students seeking improved insight in Physiology and Nutrition. Students who are aiming for a Nutrition-MSc are highly advised to select this module. Biochemistry might be compulsory for their future studies. Basic biochemical techniques will be explained and trained during the course.
- JXH-4003: Advance Research Skills (20) The module comprises three parts: Part A: Quantitative research design Using an experiential and flipped teaching format, students will read a series of scientific papers to develop their critical understanding of research design, including formulating a question, generating a hypothesis, study designs, sampling methods, ensuring validity and reliability, and good dissemination practices. Both original investigations and review studies will be included. Part B of this module covers material relevant to the analysis of group differences and regression analyses using quantitative methods. Specific content includes: Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions. Regression based analyses: simple and multiple linear regression; curvilinear regression; mediation and indirect effects; moderated hierarchical regression; moderated mediation. Part C: Qualitative research methods and analysis. The qualitative part of the module will address the different philosophical positions underpinning quantitative and qualitative research; qualitative research data collection methods, including interviews, focus groups and observational methods; and qualitative data analysis, including thematic content analysis, grounded theory and discourse analysis.

The module will commence with the students completing an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and setting personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on thier ethics in research and consultancy, needs analysis and counselling skills. Discipline specific workshops will also take place. A portfolio will be developed that records activities including meetings with supervisor, workshop attendance, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thoughts/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (i.e., evidence of reflective practice).

- JXH-4005: Exercise Psychology (20) (Semester 2) This module will examine some of the major theoretical and practical issues in applied exercise psychology. Specifically, the following topics will be explored: the role of mental skills and confidence in exercising regularly; self-discrepancies; barriers and motivators for exercise; motivation and motivationally supportive environments; and counselling for exercise behaviour change. In addition, a student-led approach will be adopted with students researching and verbally presenting material on a chosen topic. Teaching will comprise lectures, seminars and group work.
- JXH-4007: Performance Physio (20) (Semester 1 + 2) Part A (Semester 1) will commence by reviewing the link between physiology and physical performance. This is followed by detailed examination of endurance activities with emphasis on muscle oxygenation and metabolism and the implications for fatigue. A final consideration will be some alternative models of fatigue in endurance activities. Part B (Semester 2) examines some of the other factors that exert a major influence on performance, such as basic and applied aspects of strength and power, and alterations in immune function.
