Overall aims and purpose
The aims of this module are:- 1. To reinforce a range of basic concepts covered in core chemistry module (FXX 1103). 2. To enable students to apply those concepts to a wide range of problems. 3. To encourage students to improve their chemistry communication (written and oral) skills.
This module reinforces fundamental concepts in inorganic (coordination chemistry, transition metal chemistry, packing of solids, crystal systems), organic (functional groups, expanded nomenclature of organic molecules, reaction mechanisms, FGI), and physical chemistry (kinetics and thermodynamics) using a problem solving approach

Threshold (40%). Knowledge and understanding of the content covered in the course is basic; Problems of a routine nature are generally adequately solved.
Good (~60%). Knowledge base covers all essential aspects of subject matter dealt with in the programme and shows good evidence of enquiry beyond this. Conceptual understanding is good. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved in a logical manner; solutions are generally correct and acceptable.
Excellent (>70%). Knowledge base is extensive and extends well beyond the work covered in the module. Conceptual understanding is outstanding. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved with efficiency and accuracy; problem-solving procedures are adjusted to the nature of the problem.
The student should be able to demonstrate the application of fundamental chemistry concepts (details defined in FXX1103) to a range of problems.
The student should be able to demonstrate written and oral communication in the Professional Chemistry Language on a Basic User Level.

Lectures/Problem solving group sessions - 12 hours total timetabled at 6x2 hour sessions once every two weeks.(dedicated to study skills). Contact time 12 hours
