### Overall aims and purpose

The module aims to establish the foundations required in digital logic design such that the students can design and implement substantial digital systems in subsequent years.

### Course content

• Number systems. Laws of Boolean algebra. De Morgan’s Laws of basic logic gates: OR, AND, NOT Exclusive OR (XOR)

• Digital Comparators; Parity generation and checking; Flip-flops; Memories.

• Karnaugh Maps; Multiplexers and demultiplexers; Shift Registers and Counters; Simple state machines.

Understand the basic rules of binary logic and the operation of simple logic gates.

Able to undertake binary arithmetic. Able to define the laws of Boolean algebra and state the operation of basic logic gates Able to use the laws of Boolean algebra and logic gates to identify means for implementing simple logic circuits. Is adept at applying Boolean algebra in the manipulation of logical expressions.

Implement basic combinatorial and sequential logic circuits using logic gates.

Familiar with the operation of basic combinatorial and sequential logic circuits. Can demonstrate the application of logic circuits in the implementation of standard operations. Is able to identify the scope for wider application of logic circuits

Undertake design of simple combinatorial and sequential circuits.

Familiar with Karnaugh map construction. Knows the function of standard sequential logic circuits. Can utilize Karnaugh maps to simplify the design of logic circuits. Is able to explain the operation of the principal sequential logic circuits. Able to design simple state machines to implement specified tasks.
