Overall aims and purpose

Ever wondered how strength & conditioning specialists help to improve performance in athletes? This module will introduce the fundamental principles of strength and conditioning, including training science theory, athlete and sport needs analysis and athlete monitoring during training and competition.

Course content

During the course, you will learn about the fundamental theories of training science. You will also carry out an athlete needs analysis, and discover how factors such as individual athlete profiles, the physiological demands and injury profile of the sport can affect the strength and conditioning process. The module will also help you to understand how to design training programs, considerations for different types of training and how to monitor athletes through the training process to optimise performance. Pre-released content will introduce and develop students’ understanding of theoretical concepts whilst 'live' interactive discussions and 'real-world' case studies will help transfer this knowledge into the practical domain.

The module is taught by academics with experience of working as practitioners in the field of professional and performance sport and are active researchers in the field.

Students will use this private study to complete homework tasks based on applying principles of sport science in practice, additional reading and study towards the online test.

This module will include a combination of pre-released content, live online seminars and on-campus practical sessions.
