Overall aims and purpose

This module during Year 2 will focus on the further development of practical skills associated with canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, coasteering and wild swimming, in inland and coastal environments. Practical activity will be supported by classroom sessions aimed at developing awareness and understanding associated with safe and effective coaching or leadership in canoeing and kayaking. Skill development will focus on the competencies required to either lead, second or coach groups in inland and coastal environments. Participation in this module will require a commitment of time and effort by all participants in an outdoor, potentially hazardous environment.

Course content

NB. To ensure learning outcomes are met and health and safety is maintained, practical sessions are compulsory. If you miss more than one practical session without genuine mitigating circumstances you will fail the module (due to not meeting the learning outcomes).

Good understanding and appropriate decision-making in relation to safe and sustainable participation of others in these activities. Good assessment of the development needs of their own and others with regard to canoeing and kayaking activities.

Attainment of a British Canoeing personal performance star awards or equivalent skill development as a paddler, leader or coach. Assesses learning outcomes 1, 2 & 3, as well as the effort put into the course by the student.

Practical activity further developing personal skills in various inland and sea environments and begin to develop either leadership or coaching skills. Optional BCU and/or UKCC training and assessment opportunities are available both as part of the course and outside of these hours for those wishing to make the most of their time this year.

Throughout this practical module there is the opportunity to gain nationally recognised governing body (British Canoeing) awards for personal performance and safety and rescue training, coaching and leadership. Please note that it is not expected that you will do all of the awards listed below, the certificates you choose will depend on whether you choose to work on personal development or coach development. If you choose personal development you will most likely complete one or more 3 Star Awards. If you choose coach development you will need to do the 2 Star, FSRT and register as a level 1 coach. If you already hold a 3 star you may like to consider higher level leadership awards.

It is not compulsory to do or purchase any of the British Canoeing certificates; some students do not intend to work in the outdoor sector and so do not need the qualifications. However, if you do wish to purchase certificate there is a charge required by British Canoeing and this will need to be paid by you.
