Overall aims and purpose

Dylai myfyrwyr sy'n cwblhau'r modiwl blwyddyn gyntaf hon fod wedi datblygu dealltwriaeth sylfaenol o ffisioleg ddynol a histoleg mamalaidd wrth baratoi ar gyfer modiwlau ail flwyddyn ddilynol. Bydd y modiwl yn defnyddio dull sydd yn seiliedig ar systemau i archwilio'r rhan fwyaf o brif systemau'r corff.

Course content

Nod y modiwl hwn yw rhoi gwybodaeth sylfaenol i'r myfyrwyr am anatomeg, ffisioleg a histoleg bodau dynol mewn iechyd. Mae'r cwrs yn cyflwyno'r myfyrwyr i ddatblygiad y corff dynol, ac yn edrych yn fanylach ar amrywiol systemau'r corff gan gynnwys; systemau cylchrediad y gwaed, anadlol, treulio, endocrin, arennol, nerfus, atgenhedlu a chyhyrysgerbydol, gyda meinweoedd ac organau yn cael eu harsylwi'n macrosgopig ac yn ficrosgopig.

Assessment Criteria


A good student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate. The work shows a thorough understanding based on the presented material. The argument is logic and well supported.


An excellent student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module and be able to detailed examples where appropriate, supported by additional reading and knowledge drawn from other modules. Evidence of critical thinking and wider reading is essential for A+ and A marks.

C- to C+

A student would have a sound knowledge across most aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate. The work shows an understanding based on the presented material. The argument may have gaps and lacks support.


D- to D+ A threshold student should have basic knowledge of the essential facts and key concepts of human physiology and histology presented in the module. The work incompletely covers the module material and there may be no argument and lack of examples & support.

Teaching and Learning Strategy


Semester 1: 9x 2 hour lectures 1x 2 hour revision session

Semester 2 9x 2 hour lecture 1x 2 hour revision

Please note, for 2020/21, a blended learning style of delivery will be used. Students unable to attend Bangor University campus will be able to follow all aspects of the teaching online. On-campus teaching may be integrated, subject to Covid-19 related restrictions.

Medicine benchmarks:

Knowledge & understanding of the anatomical, physiological and biochemical processes related to cellular, musculo-skeletal and cardiovascular function, in terms of both normal and diseased states. (benchmarks: 4.2.a, b, d, e, f, g, h)

Knowledge & understanding of the psychological concepts of health, illness and disease. (benchmarks: 4.2. j, k, n)

Be able to make accurate observations of clinical phenomena and appropriate critical analysis of clinical data. (benchmark: 6.2.1)

Synthesise information from a variety of sources to aid knowledge and understanding of medical sciences. (benchmark: 6.1.b)

Analyse, evaluate and interpret the research evidence underpinning medical sciences. (benchmark: 5.2)

Biomedical Science benchmarks:

The programme aims to give students a comprehension of scientific investigation of human diseases based on human systems. Upon graduation students should have acquired good knowledge and experience of the following areas including health and disease (theoretical, analytical and practical aspects): Cellular Pathology, Human Physiology and Anatomy. (benchmarks: 5.1; 5.3; 5.5)

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to engage with essential facts, major concepts, principles and theories associated with human anatomy and physiology. (benchmark: 6.4)

Graduates will be able to apply their knowledge to a professional, evidence-based approach to research into the pathogenesis and origins of disease processes and the diagnosis and monitoring of disorders. (benchmark: 6.2)

Biomedical sciences graduates should recognise and apply subject-specific theories, paradigms, concepts or principles to reach evidence-based decisions. (benchmark: 4.2)

To be able to receive and respond to a variety of sources of information (textual, numerical, verbal, graphical), carry out sample selection, produce record scientific records & analyse data within a statistical context (an understanding of statistical significance and statistical power), and to communicate the outcomes to a variety of audiences using a range of formats, media and approaches including the avoidance of plagiarism. (benchmark: 4.4; 4.5)


Resource implications for students

This module will require access to audio-visual recording equipment such as a webcam. For students on campus, there is loan equipment that can be used.

Human Physiology by Gillian Pocock. This is published by Oxford University Press and whilst there is a snazzy new 5th edition I find the 4th edition to be more than satisfactory for this module. Link to the publisher’s site can be found here: LINK If you do wish to buy a textbook for this module, I advise that you purchase this one. Please note, purchase is not mandatory for engagement with this module.

Histology: A Text and Atlas (With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology) by Michael H. Ross, Wojciech Pawlina. This is published by Walters Kluwer and is an exceptionally comprehensive review of histology and cellular physiology. Whilst a lot of the content is slightly “advanced” for this module, the microscopic images and annotations are excellent.

Please note the list below are open access resources which you can find online and use for free.

OpenStax Anatomy & Physiology an online textbook on anatomy & physiology which you can download as a PDF and is quite comprehensive. For the purpose of this module, this is more than suitable to use as a recommended textbook. There are also loads of associated resources (including videos, animations etc.) which can be accessed via the OpenStax website.

Histology Guide excellent fully annotated histology guide with some immersive virtual slides. Highly advised that you make extensive use of this website.
