MA Medieval Studies
These are the modules currently offered on this course in the 2019–20 academic year.
- KAH-4401: Understanding the Middle Ages (20) Core Students who enter the MA programme will have obtained familiarity with the Middle Ages from the perspective of one particular discipline. The course is designed to introduce them to the breadth of subject areas and methodologies to be subsumed under the umbrella of medieval studies broadly understood. Scholars from Bangor will lead thematic sessions on individual aspects (archaeology, history, literature, liturgy, music) and advanced skills which are pivotal to medievalist research (specialised reference sources and databases). Additionally, students will encounter cutting-edge research presented by visiting scholars from Bangor and beyond in the seminar series (organised by the Centre for Medieval Studies). These sessions will primarily focus on areas not represented in Bangor (e.g. art history, philosophy, theology, history of science) and will vary year on year, depending on the availability of staff and the students' core interests. The practice of critical discourse will be trained by through occasional discussion sessions on seminal and controversial methodological approaches, in which students take the lead.
- QXE-4025: Manuscript and Printed Books (30) Core This module will explore a range of manuscripts and incunabula from the medieval and early modern periods, with a view to engaging with the complex notions of medieval written artefact and composite books, the circulation and the dissemination of manuscripts and printed books. This module will offer the postgraduate the opportunity to pursue highly innovative lines of research in often neglected fields of study, including editing from digital resources and dealing with complex issues in transcription. There will be ample time during the semester for the postgraduate to shape and develop their own enquiries.

- CXC-4003: Dissertation (60) (Semester 3)
- WXT-4011: Part II Submission (60) (Semester 3) The Part Two module of the MA or MMus consists of a single project of a scope and scale that a student may reasonably expect to completed after four to five months of full-time, independent, supervised study. It should demonstrate advanced knowledge and study in the field, and should incorporate some level of individuality in terms of thought and approach. It will normally be undertaken in the main study area chosen for Part One, and may take the form of either (i) a dissertation or equivalent prose study, (ii) a portfolio of compositions, (iii) an edition with commentary or (iv) a public recital, depending on the student's main area of specialism. The scope and content of the project will be guided by the supervisor(s), and should follow the plan submitted in the module 'Preparing for the Part Two project'.or
WXC-4011: Cyflwyniad Project Rhan II (60) (Semester 3)Mae Rhan Dau rhaglen yr MA neu'r MMus yn cynnwys project unigol ar rychwant a graddfa y byddai disgwyl rhesymol i'w gwblhau wedi 4 neu 5 mis o astudiaeth annibynnol, lawn-amser dan arolygiaeth. Dylai ddangos gwybodaeth ac astudiaeth uwch yn y maes, gan ymgorffori hefyd ryw lefel o waith gwreiddiol o ran meddwl a dull. Fel rheol, cynhelir y project yn y prif faes astudiaeth a ddewiswyd ar gyfer Rhan Un, a gall fod ar ffurf naill ai (i) traethawd hir neu astudiaeth ryddieithol gyfatebol, (ii) portffolio o gyfansoddiadau, (iii) argraffiad gyda sylwebaeth, neu (iv) ddatganiad cyhoeddus, yn ôl prif faes arbenigedd y myfyriwr. Yr arolygwr/arolygwyr fydd yn rhoi cyfarwyddyd ar rychwant a chynnwys y project, a ddylai ddilyn y cynllun a gyflwynwyd yn y modiwl 'Paratoi ar gyfer y Project Rhan Dau'.
- HPH-4075: Dissertation (60) (Semester 3) The MA dissertation will set the chosen research in its broader context e.g. historiography, theoretical framework, geographical and historical framework. It will set research questions and a structure will be worked out. It will describe and analyse the chosen topic using a range of relevant secondary and primary evidence. The project will be written up in an ordered manner that conforms with conventions set out in the Style Sheet provided for MA students.
- QXE-4090: The Postgraduate Dissertation (60) (Semester 3) The Dissertation module constitutes Part Two of the MA, and represents the culmination of the programme of study in the production of a substantial piece of scholarly research. Students are required to produce a 20,000-word dissertation on a literary topic, the precise nature of which will be agreed in consultation with the supervisor. Early meetings will be used to discuss ideas, resources, and approaches, later meetings to discuss final drafts of the dissertation.

- HPH-4006: Documents and sources Med&EMod (20) (Semester 2) The course will examine a wide range of medieval and early modern genres of historical sources, including charters, records of central government, historians of medieval England and Wales, probate records, legal records, sources for parliament, visual sources, pamphlets.
- QXE-4011: MA Open Essay 1 (30) (Semester 1) This optional module enables students who have completed two taught modules (QXE4015 Literary Theory, Scholarship and Research and one other module) to develop an individual research project, shorter in length than the MA Dissertation, with guidance from a supervisor. The precise nature of the topic will be agreed between the student and the supervisor.
- CXC-4012: Astudiaeth Unigol: 1 (40) (Semester 1 + 2) Mae `Astudiaeth Unigol: 1' yn un o fodiwlau craidd MA: Iaith a Llenyddiaeth Gymraeg. Bydd union gynnwys a chyfeiriad y modiwl yn dibynnu ar raglen unigol y myfyriwr. Bydd y tri modiwl `Astudiaeth Unigol' sy'n 40 credyd yr un yn ymffurfio rhyngddynt yn rhaglen gydlynus a chydgysylltiol a fydd yn paratoi'r myfyriwr ar gyfer y traethawd hir 60 credyd dilynol. Rhoddir sylw i hyfforddiant ymchwil o fewn y modiwlau unigol. At hynny, mewn cyfres seminarau pwnc-benodol, trafodir amryw faterion sy'n berthnasol i'r broses o ymchwilio ar gyfer gwaith ôl-radd, e.e. cywair priodol ar gyfer traethodau academaidd, llên-ladrad, cywain ffynonellau, trefnu nodiadau, sefydlu llyfryddiaethau. Trwy gyfrwng ymweliadau â llyfrgelloedd ac archifdy PCB, tynnir sylw at yr ystod o gronfeydd gwybodaeth sydd ar gael a'u defnyddioldeb i'r ymchwilydd unigol. Yn ogystal â sylw i'r agweddau ymarferol a thechnegol hyn ar weithgaredd ymchwil, bydd cyfle mewn seminarau i gyfranogi o amgylchedd ymchwil Ysgol y Gymraeg ac elwa ar y cyfle i drafod rhaglenni unigol yng nghwmni myfyrwyr ôl-radd ac ymchwil eraill.
- QXE-4012: MA Open Essay 2 (30) (Semester 2) Each module is taught by up to six individual supervisory tutorials, one hour each, the exact timing across the semester to be agreed between tutor and student. QXE4012 is taken by all students taking the English MA.
- QXE-4029: Gender & Devotion in EM Lit. (30) (Semester 1) This module explores a wide selection of published and manuscript texts that demonstrate the breadth, continuities and dissimilarities of late medieval ad early modern women’s devotional writing practices (both religious and secular). Graduate students will be introduced to the writing of anchorites, mystics, mothers and lovers, from across the social spectrum, who expressed their devotion in a variety of genres and for widely differing audiences. The material under discussion emerges in forma as varied as translation, lyric poetry, letters, early autobiographical writing, exegesis, polemic, prophecy and prayer. This module offers opportunities for students to develop and pursue highly innovative lines of research in the analytical comparison of devotional writing from pre- and post-Reformation England.
- QXE-4030: Medieval Arthur (30) (Semester 1) This module will explore the Arthurian myth and legends from its inception through to the end of the Middle Ages, while paying attention to the way the story was shaped in different centuries, socio-political contexts, as well as material culture – the manuscript and printed editions. The module will offer the postgraduates on the MA in Arthurian Literature a solid foundation for the continuation of their course, while giving others, who choose this module as an option, an insight into the origins and development of Arthurian themes in early literature. There will be ample time during the semester for the postgraduates to shape and develop their own enquiries of the subject.
- QXE-4033: Postgraduate Portfolio S1 (10) (Semester 1) This module is designed to enable to postgraduate to pursue advanced level of research through sustained pieces of writing on a research area to be determined by student and tutor. This module offers the opportunity for the postgraduate to submit a portfolio of work of independent research (guided by tutorial supervision) addressing an enquiry which might not be on offer within the existing range of core and optional postgraduate modules within the existing menu in the home CAH School. The intellectual format of the portfolio will be agreed by tutor and student and will present an ideal outlet in which to demonstrate the student¿s scholarly practices: the ability to construct carefully researched and organised piece(s) of writing; the ability to abide by scholarly practices of notation and referencing; the ability to engage at an advanced level with critical approaches to the chosen field of enquiry; the ability to formulate argumentation at an advanced level.
