Module JWB-4007:
Performance Physiology
Module Facts
Run by School of Human and Behavioural Sciences
20.000 Credits or 10.000 ECTS Credits
Semester 1 & 2
Organiser: Dr Jennifer Cooney
Overall aims and purpose
The aim of this module is to provide a physiological framework for understanding performance.
Course content
This seminar style module explores the link between human physiology and performance sport. We will review cardiac, respiratory and vascular aspects of performance, muscle metabolism and supplementation, long-term physiological and biochemical effects of training, exercise and immune function, and will begin to explore the mechanisms of fatigue that influence exercise performance.
Learning outcomes mapped to assessment criteria
threshold Some knowledge and understanding of the theoretical aspects of human and performance physiology. Little or no attempt to integrate different theoretical perspectives where more than on is used; lacking a concise and succinct writing style and including superfluous material; no evidence of reading/research beyond that given in the reading pack in preparation for the assignment. |
good Good knowledge and understanding of the theoretical aspects of human and performance physiology. Good application of chosen theory/theores to practice; concise and succinct writing style with no superfluous material; evidence of wide reading/research beyond that given in the reading pack in preparation for the assignment. |
excellent Excellent knowledge and understanding of the theoretical aspects of human and performance physiology. Insightful application of chosen theory/theories to practice; extremely concise and succinct writing style with no superfluous material; evidence of considerable reading/research beyond that given in the reading pack in preparation for the assignment. |
