Overview

Think of your dream job. This module aims to make your dream a reality. In this module you will complete a journey of self-development; the destination is a you that is better equipped to obtain an interview and secure your desired role. We have worked with employers to identify what qualifications, knowledge and skills, experience, personal qualities, and values you generally require to meet the essential and desirable criteria of key employers within the sport and exercise science sector. As well as enhancing your competitiveness, the module will also explore how to be kind to yourself. Life coaching techniques will be explored from a physiological and psychological perspective to maximise your health and well-being. Taken together, the module will ensure you are more competitive in the job market, will be valued as an employee or employer, and can remain so throughout your future career.

Indicative list of the 3 practicals: Practical 1 (2hrs): The health check MOT Workshop 2 (2 hrs): Resilience – beyond bouncing back? Practical 3 (8 hrs): “I’m a good team worker”

7 x 2hr guest lectures: Employability talks by content experts.

Assessment Strategy

Reflective practice (10%):
Threshold
Includes three referenced and structured reflection cycles of maximum one page each on the correct topics (one lecture, one practical, and your intervention).

Good Also includes clear link to how future practice will be enhanced.

Excellent Also includes novel reflection methodologies.

Curriculum vitae (15%): Threshold Includes two CVs, the second of which is correctly formatted with sections including: contact details; qualifications; work experience.

Good Also includes feedback on a first draft of your CV, with clear explanation of how this feedback was acted upon.

Excellent Also identifies how CV could be developed in the future to obtain a dream or example role, using SMART goal setting.

Internet presence (30%): Threshold Includes an internet presence on at least one platform.

Good Also has developed internet presence so that it is professional and engaging, and/or uses multiple platforms.

Excellent Also has developed presence so that it differentiates you to enhance employability.

Intervention (45%): Threshold Includes a report with an intervention goal, an intervention description, and an evaluation of effectiveness.

Good Also includes a SMART goal, a referenced intervention description, and a validated outcome assessment.

Excellent Also includes a challenging but realistic goal, extensive referenced justification to support the intervention, and insightful interpretation of outcome assessment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Awareness of different career options in and beyond Sport and Exercise Science, and the essential criteria, qualifications, skills, and attributes required to work successfully within those careers.

  • Identify and plan the development of sport and exercise science skills, generic skills and behaviours required to work in their preferred profession.

  • Identify their own health and wellbeing, by summarising available interventions to enhance healthy behaviours.

  • Plan, implement and evaluate a self-help intervention, to change behaviour and enhance their physical and mental health.

Continuous Professional Development Portfolio: The portfolio will include three separate structured reflection cycles, development of a professional internet presence, compiling two CVs, and a report of an intervention that you have designed and implemented to improve your own health and wellbeing.
