Overall aims and purpose

Exercise is Medicine!. In this module you will learn about the common chronic conditions that are having a significant impact on peoples health today and how regular exercise and increased physical activity can be used to help treat a variety of these chronic conditions. Using current exercise guidelines and the latest research literature you will develop key knowledge and practical skills which will enable you to screen patients for exercise, perform a wide range of health assessments and prescribe an individualised exercise programme for a variety of clinical populations. The knowledge and practical skills that you will develop in this module will provide you with a toolkit of knowledge and skills to take away for your future work.

Course content

This module will cover the following themes: Semester One: Rheumatoid Arthritis Multiple Sclerosis Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Coronary Heart Disease Cancer Introduction to Exercise Rehabilitation and Screening Patients, Exercise Testing, Exercise Prescription

Semester Two: Cardio Protective Effects of Exercise, Aging and Cardiovascular Health, Exercise and the Autonomic Nervous System, Examination of Vascular Health,

There are three assessments for this module - see assessment tab for further information.

Please note: module failure that prevents any student from passing the year will require resit assessment and attendance at Supplementary Assessment Week (exact date TBC but expected to be in July 2021).

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically discuss the physiological adaptations that occur with exercise training in the human body and how this relates to a range of chronic conditions.

  2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of and critically discuss pathophysiology, symptoms, and diagnosis of different diseases

  3. Plan and implement a variety of suitable exercise tests and exercise training programmes for a range of patients with chronic conditions or in those during recovery from treatment.

  4. Be able to critically analyse scientific papers and reviews to determine the most appropriate exercise tests and exercise programmes for people with a variety of chronic conditions.

2000 word written assignment on the impact of exercise on cardiovascular disease (40% of final module mark).

INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION Assessment One Audio PowerPoint Presentation

10 minute audio PowerPoint presentation of a chosen chronic condition (20% of final module mark). You will prepare a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation demonstrating your knowledge of your chosen chronic condition and how exercise can be utilized in the treatment of patients. The Presentation should include: • Background to the condition • The rationale for using exercise as a treatment for the chosen condition • Review of research papers that examine the role of exercise in treating that condition.
