Overview
• Current and emerging trends in assessment and treatments including advances in technology and tele-care. • National and European legislation, policy and professional guidelines which influence mental health practice e.g. dignity and diversity, health and safety, capacity; • Moral and ethical basis of nursing healthcare • Understanding mental health legislation and how it relates to care and treatment of people with mental health problems including those with complex needs - ageing, cognitive impairment, long term conditions and those approaching the end of life. • Critical knowledge of common physical and mental health problems and treatments including co-morbidity and physiological and psychological vulnerability. • Accountability and responsibility; preparing to be a registrant. • Allocation/delegation of care; The nurse’s contribution to healthcare evidence; professional development and practice • Communicating appropriately with adults, children and carers using concepts of empathy, advocacy, dignity and respect; • Complexity of decision making • Emotional intelligence/literacy. • Using evidence based individual and group psychological and psychosocial interventions. • Inter-professional roles and working in teams, communication and relationships,; • Language and cultural awareness and sensitivity; • Critiquing nursing practice in all settings through concepts such as theories of reflection (reflecting on care delivered); examine evidence base for nursing care; • Applying research/evidence to practice. • Self-awareness; e.g. own limitations; addressing limits to one’s own knowledge (unknowns); develop CPD skills (e.g. PREP); linking theory to practice through a reflective portfolio; • Implications of PREP and registered nurse status. • Politics of nursing; management of self and others; delegation; theories of management and teamwork; discipline; positive regard • Effective leadership skills • Change management and knowledge to action frameworks; • Implementing clinical supervision • Mental health promotion - raising awareness of mental health to other members of the multi-professional team and others working in health, social care and other services and settings. • Management of mental health care environments. • Innovations in mental health practice. • Partnerships in care. • Psychopharmacology and medicines management
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -To achieve Grade D the assessment must:•Demonstrate knowledge of professional, legal and ethical requirements, models or frameworks for health and wellbeing, and requirements for personal and professional development•Demonstrate ability to identify and evaluate evidence based mental health nursing and professional relationships with reference to culture, diversity, groups, and theories of communication, reflection, respect, compassion, dignity and safe practice•Have some, if only limited, evidence of background study in relation to the module learning outcomes being assessed •Attempt to present some relevant and coherent arguments.•Make some attempt to links between topics. •Provide some analysis and/or explanation of problems.•Attempt to focus on the assessment brief but with some irrelevant material and weaknesses in structure and with a large number of factual/computational errors •Demonstrate an attempt to avoid major weaknesses in presentation and accuracy. •Have some deficiencies in referencing with referencing errors evident both in and end text -good -To achieve Grade B the assessment must:•Demonstrate strong knowledge and understanding of professional, legal and ethical requirements for safe mental health practice, models or frameworks for health and wellbeing, and requirements for personal and professional development•Demonstrate good ability to identify and evaluate evidence based mental health nursing and professional relationships with reference to culture, diversity, groups, and theories of communication, reflection, respect, compassion, dignity and safe practice.•Demonstrate evidence of background study in relation to the module learning outcomes being assessed •Contain logically presented and defended arguments with some elements of original interpretation. •Describe well known links between topics•Analyse and/or explain problems using existing methods/approaches •Be well structured, highly focussed and mostly free of factual/computational errors. •Be presented to high standards with accurate communication.•Have effective and mostly accurate referencing both in and end text -excellent -To achieve Grade A the assessment must:•Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and detailed understanding of professional, legal and ethical requirements required for safe mental health practice, models or frameworks for health and wellbeing, and requirements for personal and professional development•Demonstrate an excellent ability to identify and evaluate evidence based mental health practice and professional relationships with reference to culture, diversity, groups, and theories of communication, reflection, respect, compassion, dignity and safe practice.•Demonstrate extensive background study in relation to the module learning outcomes being assessed •Contain very logically presented and defended arguments with significant elements of original interpretation. •Demonstrate an ability to identify, develop and present new links between topics.•Include new approaches to analysing and/or explaining a problem. •Be very well structured, highly focussed and free of factual/computational errors. •Be presented to a very high standard with very accurate communication •Have effective and accurate referencing both in and end text -another level-To achieve Grade C the assessment must:•Demonstrate some knowledge of professional, legal and ethical requirements, models or frameworks for health and wellbeing, and requirements for personal and professional development•Demonstrate some ability to identify and evaluate evidence based mental health nursing and professional relationships with reference to culture, diversity, groups, and theories of communication, reflection, respect, compassion, dignity and safe practice.•Have some, if only limited, evidence of background study in relation to the module learning outcomes being assessed •Attempt to present relevant and logical arguments •Describe some links between topics. •Attempt to analyse and/or explain problems. •Be focussed on the assessment brief with only some irrelevant material and weaknesses in structure and does not contain a large number of factual/computational errors •Be free of major weaknesses in presentation and accuracy•Have fairly effective referencing but with some referencing errors both in and end text
Learning Outcomes
- 1. Critically analyse professional, legal and ethical requirements in mental health nursing practice.
- 2. Evaluate and apply the appropriate evidence to support decision making during the delivery of care in mental health settings.
- 3. Utilise reflection, clinical supervision, life-long learning, collaborative working and self management in order to critically analyse and engage in personal and professional development.
- 4. Utilise and critically analyse strategies of leadership in mental health nursing, to ensure the delivery of safe patient management.
- 5. Demonstrate the numerical skills and ability to perform drug calculations for safe administration of medicines.
