Overall aims and purpose
This Year 2 module will equip students with the knowledge and skills to be able to provide support for families in meeting healthcare needs for CYP with conditions which may persist throughout childhood. The module explores the multiple physical, social, emotional and psychological issues faced by CYP and their families with life-limiting, life-threatening, long term conditions and complex needs which may present children’s nurses with major challenges when attempting to provide age appropriate support and family centred care.
• Management and support of CYP with long term life limiting complex healthcare conditions including Family Centred Care. • Negotiation and decision making with CYP and their families • Transition to adult care - policy and practice. • The conceptual models of disability and their influences on the healthcare of CYP with long-term complex healthcare needs. • Children’s palliative/ respite and bereavement care including chronic sorrow. • Pharmacological knowledge for medicine management and numeracy for CYP nurses. • Care of the child with cancer. • The essential physical needs of the pregnant or post-natal teenager. • An introduction to the care required by children and young people with emotional and /or mental health issues. • Evaluating the research evidence underpinning CYP nursing practice across settings.
Understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module, with an ability to apply what is learnt in healthcare practice. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of D- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.

- Discuss CYP nursing in different contexts, taking into account culture, diversity and groups
- Discuss and apply professional, legal & ethical requirements for CYP nursing practice
- Discuss how professional relationships are developed through appropriate communication with CYP , families and multidisciplinary teams
- Select and apply appropriate models/frameworks of health and wellbeing in the context of nursing practice.
