Overall aims and purpose
In preparation for your role as a registered CYP nurse you will appraise the strategies required to implement high quality healthcare for CYP and their families. You will develop critical thinking and decision making skills that you will explore theoretically and apply in practice. This module will build on your developing knowledge and skills with particular focus upon the acutely ill child and the child requiring palliative or end of life care. Developing your leadership qualities this module will equip you with the knowledge and skills required as a CYP nurse.
Course content
• Children and their families responses during an episode of acute illness in the child and young person
• The influence of current government policies impacting on the quality of healthcare provision for CYP
• Effectiveness of health promotion/ education for CYP.
• Pharmacological knowledge for medicine management and numeracy in preparation for registration as a CYP nurse.
• Care of the acutely ill child e.g. respiratory disorders, childhood cancers, and cardiac disorders incorporating
• Palliative and End of Life care for CYP utilising national policy and guidance
• Emotional and physical care and skills required by the CYP and their family at the end of life
• Care of the child with cancer
• Observation and assessment skills for the safe care of the acutely ill CYP E.g. invasive and non – invasive monitoring of vital signs

Understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module, with an ability to apply what is learnt in healthcare practice. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of D- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.

- Critically anaylse factors that influence care delivered by CYP nurses in different contexts, taking into account culture, diversity, groups and the individual developing child.

- Demonstrate the numerical skills and ability to perform drug calculations for safe administration of medicines.

- Critically analyse appropriate evidence to support decision making during the delivery of care to CYP and their families.

- Implement and evaluate the knowledge and skills required for safe, compassionate & effective CYP nursing practice
