Overview
Topics may include:
- Communication as a physical process and profound social activity.
- Recognition of the physical, social, psychological and cultural barriers that prevent effective communication.
- Promotion of engagement through communication and the recognition of factors leading to dis-engagement.
- Understanding and applying the theory and practice of person centeredness to the task and process of assessment.
- Ethical issues and ethical reasoning in practice with reference to potential for abuse: empowerment, autonomy and right
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -Basic understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Basic understanding of professional accountability issues. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of C- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.
-good -Good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Good understanding of professional accountability issues. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade B- in the Grading Criteria

Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse issues of effective and sensitive communication with those affected by dementia (verbal, non-verbal, written).
- Critically analyse issues of the processes underpinning social and psychological dimensions of communication as part of the lived experience of dementia
- Detail the principles in theory and practice which underpin the concept of person-centred support.
- Develop a critical understanding of communication processes and how the physical and pathological features of dementia impact upon the mechanics and
processes of communication
- Synthesise dementia care approaches to critically appraise effective communication with and by people affected by dementia including one’s own communication processes and apply sound, evidence based arguments as to how barriers may be may overcome in order to bring about engagement to support people living with dementia

Using the video of Naomi Feil and Gladys Wilson produce an outline of your assignment, in preparation for the summative written assignment. Students will be required to discuss the chosen case study as an individual presentation which will consist of a 15 minute presentation reflecting on the case study and the themes raised in the presentation.

Description
This essay will require two parts to be addressed i) Describe how Naomi Feil’s processes of communication have brought about a positive engagement with a person living with dementia (based on the video of Naomi Feil and Gladys Wilson). Demonstrate in depth knowledge of theories of human communication, apply such theories to selected case study, seeking to demonstrate the impact that the physical, social and psychological aspects of dementia may have upon effective communication (1500 words) ii) Identify one specific issue or challenge around communication and dementia to discuss further, using the wider context. By using knowledge of the theory underpinning effective communication, you will analyse the chosen issue, restructure it, and produce an implementation plan of how to respond effectively, demonstrating a transfer of theory into practice in a creative and meaningful way (1500 words)
