Overview

This course is part of a series of modules (PPT4001 and PPT4003) with the ultimate aim to develop and enhance teaching skills, understanding of issues in teaching in Higher Education, and the mechanisms involved in running and developing Human Sciences courses in Higher Education. Students will be expected to work as a member of a teaching team to complete their Teaching Practice.

These courses are predominately focused on the practice of teaching, rather than pedagogical theory. The aim of the course is to help students become a competent and adaptable teaching practitioner, able to facilitate and support student learning. Moreover, they will gain some insight and experience of the ‘hidden’ mechanisms of teaching in Higher Education (e.g., quality assurance, moderation etc). They will find these skills invaluable for their future academic development and employability.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply appropriate core knowledge and understanding of theories and approaches to effective teaching and learning practice and its critical evaluation (K1, K2, K3).

  • Apply effective and inclusive approaches to assessment by designing assessments and/or by supporting learning for assessments, and by grading work and providing feedback to students (A3, A4, K1, K2).

  • Critically evaluate effectiveness in interacting inclusively and respectfully with individuals or groups of students to provide a positive educational experience (V1, K3).

  • Develop and/or deliver effective and inclusive high-quality class materials and content (A1, A2).

  • Develop your approach to effective practice through application of critical reflection, use of pedagogical research and scholarship, and engagement with effective and inclusive continuous professional development (A5, K3, V3).
