Assessment Strategy

Excellent (A to A-) Case Study 1 - Budget for local services - provide an excellent discussion of how to ‘spend’ a budget in a fictional area in a way that addresses the social problems. - use critically evaluated academic evidence to support all decisions.

Case study 2. Area analysis - critically outline a local area in terms of its social characteristics, housing and employment status and sectors - critically discuss and evaluate relevant academic literature. - critically evaluate their local town centre in terms of the services it offers, the types of shops that are there including details of those that are empty, and highlights what is missing and for whom (draws upon academic literature and observations from the social policy walk)

Good (B+ to B-) Case Study 1 - Budget for local services - provide a very good discussion of how to ‘spend’ a budget in a fictional local area in a way that addresses social problems but there needs to be more detail e.g. one area has less detail to another. - provide supporting evidence for their decisions but it is ether not well thought through, and/or not very detailed or the types of sources are not always academic.

Case study 2. Area analysis - have a very good understanding of one local area in terms of its social characteristics, housing composition and employment status & sectors but does not provide a detailed overview. - have evaluated their local town centre but more detail is needed in relation one of the following 1. the services the town offers, 2. the types of shops that are there (including details of those that are empty), and 3. what is missing and for whom. - provide academic literature but a more critical discussion is needed .

Satisfactory (C+ to C-) Case Study 1 - Area analysis - have a good understanding of one local area as it provides some information of its social characteristics, housing composition, employment status & sectors but does not provide a detailed overview. - provide a good discussion of the local area but is missing a detailed discussion of one or more of the following 1. the services the town offers, 2. the types of shops that are there (including details of those that are empty), and 3. what is missing and for whom. - discuss some academic literature but a lot of web references are used and academic literature may not be relevant or up to date.

Case study 2. Budget for local services - provide a discussion of how to ‘spend’ a budget in a fictional local area but supporting evidence for their decisions needs to come from academic sources, and/or need to be up to date.

Threshold (D+ to D-) Case Study 1 - Area analysis - have a poor understanding of one local area as it provides little/no information of its social characteristics, housing composition, employment status and sectors. - provide a limited discussion of the local area and is missing any discussion of any or all of the following 1. the services the town offers, 2. the types of shops that are there (including details of those that are empty), and 3. what is missing and for whom. - use little to no academic literature.

Case study 2. Budget for local services - provide a poor discussion of how to ‘spend’ a budget in a fictional local area as it does not link back to the needs of the area - use little to no supporting evidence for their decisions.
