Overall aims and purpose
1. To draw on previous understanding of the early years curriculum to compare and examine the methods of other countries in offering a curriculum that is acknowledged as good practice in the field of early childhood.
2. To understand how the early childhood curriculum has changed and developed over time, with reference to leading educators and their contribution.
3. To understand and evaluate the aims and working practices of contemporary agencies that work with parents.
4. To analyse the process of nurturing a professional and constructive relationship between parents and agencies, e.g., school, nursery, etc.
Course content
1. Links with the community to include e.g. Library Service, Barnardo’s, Home-School links, Incredible Years’ Parenting Project, Social Services, CAMHS: Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Flying Start.
2. Different methods of designing and delivering a curriculum for young children.
3. Quality within a curriculum and contemporary opinion about the nature of the quality that there should be in an early childhood curriculum (e.g., 'The Learning Country: The Foundation Phase').
4. Introduction to Reggio Emilia: the history, the philosophy, the buildings and human and other resources, the experiences, the execution, and assessment.
5. Transferring the understanding of the use of 'the hundred languages of children' to the students' workplaces and analysing to what extent the philosophy and curriculum of Reggio Emilia can be conveyed outside its natural environment.
6. Educators of the past in the field of early childhood: their contribution and influence (amongst others, Montessori, Steiner, and Isaacs are discussed).
7. Introduction to High/Scope and an evaluation of the success of that method of providing a curriculum for young children; comparisons with the curriculum in Scandinavia, etc.
