School Experience Secondary
Module Facts
Run by School of Educational Sciences
30.000 Credits or 15.000 ECTS Credits
Semester 1 & 2
Organiser: Mr Dewi Rowlands
Overall aims and purpose
To enable students to develop the skills and competence in practical teaching that are required to satisfy the learning outcomes, which at HE Level 3 are the statutory standards for the award of QTS. (See the Programme Specification and the School Experience Handbook.)
Course content
The programme followed in the College Professional Studies modules is applied to the teaching situation in a secondary school. Trainees have opportunities to observe how pupils learn and the strategies used by experienced teachers to advance that process. Following this, the focus is on thorough preparation, class management, planning for progression and assessment. In Year 2, the main placement involves eight weeks with a Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils. The exact pattern may change from year to year because of practical considerations, including variations in the calendar of the University and of schools. Currently it is arranged as a single block in Term 2. The learning outcomes for the School Experience modules are derived directly from the statutory standards, adapted to the appropriate level. They provide a detailed description of the threshold level for success in each year. They are included in the Programme Specification, which sets out the minimum requirements for each level. They fall into three categories: S1: Professional values and practice S2: Knowledge and understanding S3: Teaching, including; S3.1 Planning, expectations and targets S3.2 Monitoring and assessment S3.3 Teaching and class management
The detailed requirements cannot easily be summarised. The structure and content of School Experience are naturally complex, students are provided with a School Experience Handbook which sets out all requirements in detail. Clear guidelines are offered as well as examples of all forms used for assessment and record-keeping. To understand the content of the School Experience module fully, it is essential to refer to the appropriate School Experience Handbook and Professional Studies programme as well as to National Curriculum documentation and the statutory standards (Becoming a Qualified Teacher Circular No 017/2009) and non-statutory guidelines (Becoming a Qualified Teacher Handbook of Guidance) of the Welsh Government these set out in detail the statutory requirements and guidelines that largely govern this element of ITET.
