Overall aims and purpose

The aim of this module is to provide:- i) To provide basic key chemical skills required for all chemistry programmes, e.g. basic chemical drawing and computational requirements required for all chemistry programmes. ii) To provide an introduction to transferrable skills – note taking, writing, information searching and revision methods

Course content

This course provides a basic introduction to a range of topics that underpin undergraduate chemistry. Study skills including introduction to Bangor intranet and Blackboard, effective note taking, writing and oral communication, plagiarism and effective revision strategies will be delivered by chemistry staff. In addition a range of programs and databases which are utilised routinely by chemists will be introduced including Chemdraw and Web of knowledge.

Assessment Criteria


Threshold (40%). Knowledge and understanding of the content covered in the course is basic; Problems of a routine nature are generally adequately solved; Transferable skills are at a basic level.


Good (~60%). Knowledge base covers all essential aspects of subject matter dealt with in the programme and shows good evidence of enquiry beyond this. Conceptual understanding is good. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved in a logical manner; solutions are generally correct and acceptable. Performance in transferable skills is sound and shows no significant deficiencies.


Excellent (>70%). Knowledge base is extensive and extends well beyond the work covered in the programme. Conceptual understanding is outstanding. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved with efficiency and accuracy; problem-solving procedures are adjusted to the nature of the problem. Performance in transferable skills is generally very good.

Learning outcomes

  1. Students should be able to demonstrate competent computational skills using commonly used chemistry software packages.

  2. Students should be able to demonstrate basic key study skills required for all chemistry programmes.

Teaching and Learning Strategy

Practical classes and workshops

Computational Chemistry workshops at 3 x 2hour sessions - alternating with (1) in Weeks 2, 4, 6.


The module comprises of. Lectures/Workshops sessions - 10 hours total timetabled at 5x2 hour sessions Weeks 1,3,5,7,9.(dedicated to study skills).
