Overall aims and purpose
This module will research into the effect of the different kinds of Communication Difficulties on children and young people. It will discuss the implications of Language Delay, Language Disorder and Autism on the social interaction and behavioural and emotional development of children and young people in the context of the child’s home environment, school and community. By using current research, theories, personal experience and group discussion, the effect which children’s and young people’s language and communication difficulties have on their emotional and social development will be analysed. The module will weigh up the effectiveness of intervention strategies and a the support of multi-disciplinary agencies.
This module will concentrate on the development of students’ critical understanding of Language & Communication Difficulties, and analyse the effect of such conditions on the social interaction skills and emotional and social development of children and young people by giving attention to the following:
What is Communication and typical social and communication development?
Different kinds of Language & Communication Difficulties. Consider etiology, diagnosis, and presentation with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders.
Skill Deficits in individuals with Social and Communication Disorders
Intervention strategies across the lifespan
The role of parents, teachers, and carers of individuals with Language & Communication Difficulties.
The impact of Language and Communication Disorders on families.
The voice of individuals with Language and Communication Disorders.
D- to D+ A satisfactory understanding of the main theories concerning Language & Communication Difficulties, together with the ability to discuss, fairly critically, the long-term and short-term implications of the difficulties on the development of children and young people within
C- to C+ A considerable understanding of the main theories concerning Language & Communication Difficulties, together with the ability to discuss critically the short-term and long-term implications of the difficulties on the development of children and young people within their social circles. A good understanding and critical evaluation of statutory documentation and procedures in the area, including the multi-agency intervention and strategies used to support young people with Language & Communication Difficulties.
A- to A* A comprehensive understanding of the main theories concerning Language & Communication Difficulties, together with the ability to discuss critically and in depth the short-term and long-term implications of the difficulties on the development of children and young people within their social circles. An excellent understanding and critical evaluation of o statutory documentation and procedures in the area, including the multi-agency intervention and strategies used to support young people with Language & Communication Difficulties.
Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of social and communication difficulties and their implications on children and young people and their families.
Appraise critically the research and theories concerning language difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Demonstrate critical understanding of the effect of language difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorders on the social and emotional behaviour of children and young people, and the implications of this on their development within the family and society.
Evaluate the methods of recognising, responding to and supporting the needs of children and young people with social and communication difficulties.
Analyse, discuss and critically reflect on their personal learning experiences and relating these to their own opinions and ideas on children and young people with language and communication difficulties and their effects on their emotional and social development.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Private Study (152 hours)
Seventeen Interactive lectures - 1.5 hours per week.
Six one and a half hour tutorials
