Overview

In addition to the acquisition of theoretical models coming mainly from management, marketing and economics, the study of tourism also requires an understanding of the application of these models to the daily activities of tourism enterprises. To achieve this aim, this module introduces students to the tourism sector from a practical perspective, giving them the opportunity to get closer to the tourism sector through field visits and guest lectures. The module will also enhance students' employability by providing them with the opportunity to connect with business managers and understand what is required from tourism graduates. Furthermore, first-hand contacts with managers can be used by students in the perspective of potential internships or summer jobs. Field visits and guest lectures will alternate with class lessons during which the companies visited/approached will be analysed.

Assessment Strategy

-excellent -A- to A+ (70%+): Outstanding performance. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills. -good -B- to B+ (60-69%): Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills. -satisfying -C- to C+ (50-59%): Much of the relevant information and skills mostly accurately deployed. Adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Fair integration of theory/practice/information in the pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Some evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills. -threshold -D- to D+ (40-49%): No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.

Group Presentation

Description

20-minute presentation on one of the companies analysed during the field trips or guest lectures. Each student in the group should present for at least 5 minutes. Presentations are marked individually and each member should state in which part and how they contributed. Marks will be awarded according to the following criteria: 40% group overall work 40% individual contribution to the presentation 20% peer-to-peer evaluation based on contribution, cooperation, communication, teamwork, and reliability within the group

Description

The portfolio will contain work completed throughout the entire module and will include an essay, group report, case studies, academic article summary, a CV, and a proposed career development plan.
