Module - Semester 2
This module covers the basics of statistical analysis. Introducing the basic concepts of describing and summarising data followed by probability and probability distributions. We then build up to correlation and basic regression models. The module also involves a practical element running statistical analysis software in PC labs.
The content involves initially describing and summarising data and then a brief revision of probability and probability distributions. then we focus on principles of statistical inference followed by correlation and regression analysis models. Finally, we conclude with an introduction to regression models for panel data.
Threshold c- to c+ (50-59%): Satisfactory performance. No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Knowledge of key areas/principles only. Weaknesses in understanding of some areas. Limited evidence of background study. Answer inadequately focused on task and with some irrelevant material and poor structure. Arguments presented but lack coherence. Minor factual/computational errors. Lacking original interpretation.
Good B- to B+ (60-69%): Good performance. Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills. Understands most but not all concepts/issues. Evidence of background study. Focused answer with good structure. Arguments presented coherently. Mostly free of factual errors. Some limited original interpretation. Well known links between topics are described. Problems addressed by existing methods/approaches. Good presentation with accurate communication

- Demonstrate a good foundation in research methods and techniques that can be applied in writing reports.
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic statistical concepts, basic ideas of sampling and statistical inference.
- Demonstrate computer skills for data analysis and modelling, and use statistical computer packages.
- Formulate feasible research questions and strategies; and assemble, select and present the results of data analysis and data modelling.
- Obtain data from primary and secondary sources, and carry out investigations using summary statistics, graphs, techniques of exploratory data analysis, correlation and regression.
