Overview

Building on experiences gained during the year 2 module Understanding the police constable role, the module seeks to provide advanced discussion of communication skills, team working and leadership strategies to be employed during students work as police constables. Using experiences gained from the workplace students will critically reflect on the professionalising of policing and the role of the College of Policing.

Understanding the Police Constable Role (Advanced) Communication Skills: Reviewing effective communication strategies Communication Skills: Using Media and Social media in policing Leadership and Team-working: Principles of leadership Leadership and Team-working: Employing leadership and team working skills

In addition to the classes provided distance learning based material (this will include Panopto recordings, video resources and web based learning resources) will be provided via blackboard to supplement students learning. Students will be expected to access these resources following workshops in order to assist in the completion of assessment tasks and further explore key learning outcomes.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Acceptable work = Grades D+ to D- Very little critical analysis of relevant academic literature, legislation and police procedure Limited use of relevant texts and academic literature (texts suggested in class) Heavy reliance on real world examples and experiences to illustrate theory in practice Limited but accurate use of citation and quotation

-good -Good work = Grades B+ to C- Some critical analysis of relevant academic literature, legislation and police procedure Use of relevant texts and academic literature (texts suggested in class) General use of real world examples and experiences to illustrate theory in practice Accurate use of citation and quotation

-excellent -Excellent work = Grades A* to A- Significant critical analysis of relevant academic literature, legislation and police procedure Use of relevant texts and academic literature (including the texts suggested in class + other students have found through independent study) Where relevant use of real world examples and experiences to illustrate theory in practice Accurate use of citation and quotation

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the role of the College of Policing in professionalising policing

  • Explain what is meant by the term 'profession’

  • Know how to deal effectively with the media in a policing context

  • Review key principles of leadership in relation to policing and employ appropriate leadership skills as a police constable

  • Understand and evaluate the overall strategic context of policing and relevant national policing strategies

  • Understand the principles and processes of an effective communication strategy

  • Use social media as a means of informing and engaging with the community and promoting policing initiatives

Workbook 2,000 words based on a series of questions on leadership, teamwork, professionalisation and use of social media in Policing. Please note the use of AL Chatbox is prohibited on this module. Any potential cases will be investigated within the School's Academic Integrity Board.

Description

Reflective report (2000 words) based on experiences gained from the application of theory to practice in the workplace. Students must produce a commentary documenting their experiences engaging with the public during the course of their duties. The reflective report should focus on student views and observations on effective communication and working as part of a team as outlined in the communication skills and teamwork learning outcomes. Please note the use of AL Chatbox is prohibited with this assessment. Any cases of potential use will be referred to the School's Academic Integrity Board.
