Overall aims and purpose
Exercise is Medicine! In this module you will learn about the common chronic conditions that are having a significant impact on peoples health today. You will learn how exercise and increased physical activity can be used to help treat a variety of pathological conditions. Students will be given opportunities to develop key practical skills in clinical exercise testing and exercise prescription according to current guidelines. Additional practical sessions will help students explore techniques used for blood vessel imaging in cardiovascular research.
This module will cover the following themes: Semester One: Ischemic Heart Disease Diabetes, Obesity, Arthritis, Introduction to Exercise Rehabilitation, Exercise Testing, Exercise Prescription
Semester Two: Cardio Protective Effects of Exercise, Aging and Cardiovascular Health, Exercise and the Autonomic Nervous System, Examination of Vascular Health,

Please note: module failure that prevents any student from passing the year will require resit assessment and attendance at Supplementary Assessment Week (exact date TBC but expected to be second week of July 2020).

Critically discuss the physiological adaptations that occur with exercise training in the human body and how this relates to a range of chronic conditions.
Be able to demonstrate an understanding of and critically discuss pathophysiology, symptoms, and diagnosis of different diseases
Analyse and apply different types of suitable exercise tests and exercise training programs for a range of patients with chronic conditions or in those during recovery from treatment
Be able to critically analyse scientific papers and reviews
|CLINICAL PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT||Assessment Two Practical Exam||
Practical examination (worth 40 %) (Assessing Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3 & 4). With reference to one of the case histories given, prepare for and undertake pre-assessment consultation, functional capacity assessment, exercise prescription and lifestyle counselling for the person described.
|ESSAY||Assessment Three Written Assignment||
2000 word written assignment on the impact of exercise on cardiovascular disease (40% of final module mark).
|INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION||Assessment One Audio PowerPoint Presentation||
10 minute audio PowerPoint presentation of a chosen chronic condition (20% of final module mark). You will prepare a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation demonstrating your knowledge of your chosen chronic condition and how exercise can be utilized in the treatment of patients. The Presentation should include: • Background to the condition • The rationale for using exercise as a treatment for the chosen condition • Review of research papers that examine the role of exercise in treating that condition.
