Overview
The module is designed to provide students with a broad foundation of essential theoretical knowledge of health and social care and its application to work-based practice. It develops an overview of key sociological ideas and perspectives that address the social context of health and social care within Wales, the UK and more widely. The module provides the opportunity to critically explore the role of society and the policy environment on the health and social care of individuals, groups and populations.
This module will provide a balance between theoretical knowledge and its application to practice. This module will explore: 1) Social factors in health will be addressed through an evaluation of key social theories and structures; including gender, ethnicity, culture, social class, environment, and applied to a range of health and social care topics, including the impact of social inequalities on health, and how identified economic and social factors can influence the outcome of interventions delivery. 2) Topics will include an analysis of the social causes and consequences of health and illness, with particular reference to the role that social factors play in determining the health of individuals. 3) The social effects of health and social care policies in regards to wider population groups in the UK. 4) The relationship between health and social care delivery and the social behaviour and functions of various health and social care providers and those who use their services. 5) The current national and international policy drivers that shape health and social care provisions both for those with chronic conditions in Wales and the wider UK.

excellent A to A- An excellent student will be able to: Possess an excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional knowledge gained by the student. The student will analyse the social factors in health by providing a thorough evaluation of social theories and structures; including the analysis of a range of health and social care topics and the impact of social inequalities on health, and how identified economic and social factors can influence the outcome of interventions delivery. Evaluate the social causes and consequences of health and illness, with particular reference to the role that social factors play in determining the health of individuals. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the social effects of health and social care policies in regards to wider population groups in the UK. Critically determine the relationship between health and social care delivery and the social behaviour and functions of various health and social care providers and those who use their services. Accurately contextualise the current national and international policy drivers in relation to health and social care provisions for those with chronic conditions both in Wales and the wider UK. good B to B- A very good student will be able to: Possess a very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Demonstrate a very good understanding of the social causes and consequences of health and illness, with particular reference to the role that social factors play in determining the health of individuals. Effectively appraise the social effects of health and social care policies in regards to wider population groups in the UK. Differentiate the relationship between health and social care delivery and the social behaviour and functions of various health and social care providers and those who use their services. Accurately contextualise the current national and international policy drivers in relation to health and social care provisions for those with chronic conditions both in Wales and the wider UK. The student will demonstrate a good understanding of the social factors in health by providing an evaluation of social theories and structures; including identifying a range of health and social care topics and the impact of social inequalities on health, and how identified economic and social factors can influence the outcome of interventions delivery. Provide a good explanation of the social causes and consequences of health and illness, with particular reference to the role that social factors play in determining the health of individuals. - Analyse the current policy drivers in relation to health and social care provisions for those with chronic conditions from a local or global perspective.
