Overview
This module is designed to provide the students with an understanding of the principles of physics behind the production of x-rays & interaction with matter in the medical diagnostic process, and knowledge of osteology; to support the relevant investigations the students will be expected to perform in year one clinical practice. The module will also ensure the student can identify the safe working practices and environments associated with the use of radiographic equipment, and the health and safety legislation relating to radiography. It will promote safe practice through an appreciation of health & safety legislation and medicolegal requirements, relating to Radiography and the wider health setting. The student’s awareness of the importance of effective communication in the healthcare setting will be developed. Students will be provided with the knowledge and skills to undertake routine dental radiographs.
Learning content will include: • X-rays, dose and biological effects • Radiography of intra and extra oral views • Role of radiographer in radiation protection and compliance with radiation regulations • Protocols for patient identification, pregnancy and radiographic projections • Processing of image receptor/production of digital images • Quality criteria associated with the examination and the resulting images for the areas of practice • Reporting on radiographs
