Overview
The module explores and critically appraises key concepts in health education, health promotion, and public health. Course content may include the following:
• Principles relating to health, health education, health promotion and public health policy and practice.
• Approaches to health education, health promotion and public health.
• Public involvement and empowerment.
• Public health surveillance.
• Social marketing and communication.
• Needs and processes of health needs assessment.
• Political and ethical issues relating to health education, health promotion, and public health.
• Sustainability and sustainable health.
Assessment Strategy
Excellent / A Grade: To achieve an ‘excellent pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive understanding of health, public health and health promotion, the ability to conduct a health needs assessment, and the ability to critically analyse key topics in considerable depth. This will need to be supported by a comprehensive range of appropriate literature.
Good / B Grade: To achieve a ‘good pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate a broad understanding health, public health and health promotion, the ability to conduct a health needs assessment, and the ability to explore and analyse key topics in depth. This will need to be supported by a good range of appropriate literature.
Threshold / C Grade: To achieve a 'pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate reasonable knowledge and understanding of key topics related to health, public health and health promotion, the ability to conduct a health needs assessment, and to demonstrate some evidence of critical analysis. This will need to be supported by appropriate literature.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically evaluate the concept of empowerment, and understand the value of public involvement.
- Critically understand political and ethical issues relating to health education, health promotion, and public health.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding, knowledge and ability to conduct a health needs assessment in developing evidence-based health promotion and / or public health.
- Discuss and critically analyse the concepts of health, health education, health promotion and public health.
- Discuss and critically appraise local, national and international public health promotion strategies, programmes, health directives or health initiatives, with consideration of sustainability and sustainable development.
- Understand and critically analyse prominent theories and models of public health, health promotion and health education.

Health Needs Assessment Essay: A health needs assessment tool will be used to explore already collected data for an essay comprising three assessed parts - the health needs assessment itself, the development of a bespoke public health or health promotion intervention to address this need, and a media press release.
