Overview
The course content will include, but is not restricted to - person-centred approach to medicines management which engages the person and their family
principles of shared decision-making
consider how prescribing medicines is one approach to patient management
the role of the nurse in educating the patient on medicines management
promoting self-care and self-management
consider the social and political influences that might impact on medicines management
professionalism and application of the NMC Code
innovations and emerging technologies in medicines management
the history of non-medical prescribing and the role of nurse independent prescribing
the role of the multi-professional team in medicines management
numerical skills required for medication calculations
how pharmacology, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics can affect individual people
Learning Outcomes
- Analyse the nurse's role in patient education and health promotion in order to ensure a shared decision-making approach to medicines optimisation
- Critically apply the principles of pharmacology, pharmaocodynamics and pharmacokinetics to individuals
- Critically evaluate the significance of considering individual preferences, values and beliefs, and external factors to ensure an individualised, person-centred approach to medicines optimisation.
- Demonstrate numerical skills to undertake drug calculations for the safe administration of a range of medicines.
