Overview
National & European policy and professional guidelines, e.g. dignity & diversity, capacity, respect • Perceptions of nursing (public, political, professional & media); • NMC guidelines role of the adult nurse; • National & European legislation, e.g. Health and Safety, Human Rights Act, Mental Capacity Act; • Moral and ethical basis of nursing healthcare (e.g. dilemmas – withdrawing/withholding, resource allocation)
• Communicating with adults & carers across the lifespan, inter-professional roles, communication & relationships, working in teams; • Language and cultural awareness and sensitivity; • Appropriate communication for the delivery of nursing care across the adult lifespan; • Explore concepts of empathy, advocacy, dignity and respect • Developing negotiation/questioning skills • Decision making for patient care; prioritising nursing care; documenting nursing care; multidisciplinary team working; • Self-awareness; • Research knowledge and skills for adult nursing. • Theories of and practice of reflection (reflect on own practice); examine evidence base for nursing care; applying research/evidence to practice; • Self-awareness; e.g. awareness of own limitations; addressing limits to one’s own knowledge (unknowns); develop CPD skills (e.g. PREP); Developing a reflective portfolio. • Recognising and responding to the needs of all people, inc: Babies Children & young people Pregnant & Post natal women Individuals with mental health problems Individuals with cognitive impairment (such as; dementia etc..) Individuals with physical disabilities Individuals with learning disabilities Older people Individuals with chronic conditions
