Mae theori ffeministiaeth yn cynnwys ystod eang o safbwyntiau gwleidyddol ac athronyddol, o ffeministiaeth ryddfrydol sy'n canolbwyntio ar greu newid yn amodau byw'r ferch unigol, hyd at y ffeminstiaid radical sydd am weld y sefyllfa gymdeithasol bresennol yn cael ei gwyrdroi'n llwyr. Maes astudiaeth ffeministiaid Marcsaidd-sosialaidd yw cyfalafiaeth a phatriarchaeth, ac ystyrir beirniadaeth y ffeministiaid hyn ar theori gymdeithasegol glasurol.
