Health Studies (Top up programme for Nurses) BSc (Hons)
Please note that this programme does not lead to registration with the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) UK.
This one-year full-time programme (2 year option also available) has been developed to provide registered healthcare professionals working in a healthcare environment outside of the UK with an opportunity to top up their qualifications to first degree level.
The programme will enable individual nurses, paramedics, physiotherapists, radiographers and other registered health professionals to obtain a formal degree qualification by attending Bangor University; where graduate, lifelong learning skills together with the use of evidence based practice will be developed to enhance current professional and academic skills.
It is envisaged that by learning additional and transferable skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, students’ current professional and academic skills will be enhanced. This should increase both the overall employability and career progression of any registered healthcare professional completing the programme.

During the programme students will develop and maintain high levels of clinical judgement and understanding of practice; and will graduate as skilled healthcare professionals capable of delivering high quality, evidence based health care.
The programmes are designed to ensure students develop into reflective practitioners with enhanced problem solving skills and an in-depth understanding of the appropriate theory and reflection on clinical experience.
The programme emphasises the importance of evidence-based healthcare building upon existing research, some of which has originated within the School of Healthcare sciences at Bangor.
The course takes a broad view of topics and students will develop knowledge of local, national, international and global aspects and perspectives, with the focus of study extending from the health and well-being of individuals to the health of populations at national and international level.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The modules under the pathway will use a variety of assessments such as written assignments, student presentations and on line assessments. A student–centred approach which provides a welcome to north Wales will give an insight into the history and culture of the region. What will you study on this course?
The key elements of the course can be summarised as enabling students to:

The following Level 6 modules will be delivered as core content for this programme:
- Perspectives on Health (20 credits, core module)
- Research Methods (40 credits, core module)
- Law and Ethics (20 credits, core module)
- Advancing Professional Knowledge (20 credits, core module)
A selection of additional 20 credit optional modules will be provided from which the student may choose in order to complement those listed above.
There is also a 2 year option available for this programme for those students who do not currently possess a diploma or equivalent.
Core modules studied on this programme are:
NHS 2300: Interpreting the Evidence
Students completing this module will develop lifelong skills which will enable them to search access and evaluate appropriate literature and apply their findings to their subject area. The module will focus on research related subjects to enable the student to develop knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and methods, advanced literature searching, critical reading and critiquing skills.
The aim of this module is to allow students to develop skills in using research evidence to inform current and future practice. It develops the student’s understanding of health and care research and skills in critically evaluating extant literature to address problems and advance health and social care practice.
This module will be delivered using a blended learning approach via taught sessions and Blackboard, the University’s online distance learning medium. This will involve podcast lectures, resources and activities supported by online discussion sessions.
NHS 2302: Interpreting Quality and Safety
This module is aimed at existing and aspiring leaders and managers within health, social care and other allied professions/disciplines who have an interest in leading and developing services in order to better meet the needs of customers, clients, patients and other key stakeholders.
Specifically this module aims to develop the service improvement and problem solving skills necessary to drive improvements in the management and delivery of health care services, in order to support improved compliance with care standards, other quality assurance frameworks and improve the patient/customer/end user experience.
The content of the module includes: Quality improvement and quality management; process led service improvement to include the use of a range of process management tools e.g. voice of the customer, lean thinking, and exploratory data analysis.
Content will also include performance management theory, measurement and service improvement; leading and managing service improvement projects; leading and managing collaborative problem solving; and leading the human/cultural dimension of change – overcoming resistance and ensuring sustainability of change.
NHS 2302: Interpreting Health and Social Care
The module is designed to provide students with a broad foundation of essential knowledge of social care. It develops an overview of key sociological ideas and perspectives that address the social context of health and social care within Wales, and the UK more widely, and provides the opportunity to critically explore the role of society and the policy environment on the social care of individuals, groups and populations.
Social factors in health will be addressed through an evaluation of social theories and structures, including gender, ethnicity and social class, and applied to a range of health and social care topics. These will include the social causes and consequences of health and illness will be addressed with particular reference to the role that social factors play in determining the health of individuals and the social effects of health policies as they affect larger population groups.
This module will also address the relationship between health care delivery and the social behaviour and functions of various healthcare providers and those who use their services. All of this will be contextualised within the policy structure of health and social care provision both in Wales and across the UK.
NHS 3006: Research Methods:
This module aims to provide students with a basic understanding and appreciation of research methods/methodologies – both quantitative and qualitative – as they would be applied within a health setting.

NHS 3184: Perspectives on Health
Health and social care is an important and complex topic that takes a priority in society today. Studying this module will help the healthcare professional to understand three important areas which impact us all these being, health and wellbeing, age and later life and inequalities in health.
The module includes some of the key theories and debates in relation to all three allowing the professional to enhance their understanding of the complex nature of health and its impact on its ongoing management.

- Mental health and wellbeing

NHS 3038: Legal and Ethical considerations in Healthcare:
This module is designed to increase the student’s knowledge of the legal responsibilities that underpin the provision of health and social care and is essential for the development of clinical and professional decision-making skills. The module will provide a critical examination of issues specifically relating to professional responsibilities, accountability and patients / clients’ rights in the healthcare setting.
Topics covered include:
- Structure and function of the courts in health and social care decisions making
- Introduction to moral theories and ethical principles Litigation, alternative forms of redress/ NHS Redress Act 2006
- Vicarious liability and organisational responsibility for harm Professional accountability in health and social care
- Regulation of health and social care professionals.
- Regulation of the regulators / Professional Standards Authority
- Rights of the patients / client in health and social care – to include human rights
- Confidentiality and data protection, documentation / access to information Informed consent, capacity and best interest decision making / advocacy / Gillick competence Mental Capacity Act, DoLS and safeguarding End of life legal and ethical issues
- Domestic violence and legal / professional responsibilities
This module is suitable for International BSc students as they will be able to undertake a comparative study of the law that governs health care practice in their own country with that of England and Wales.
NHS 3196: Advancing knowledge
Health and Social Care staff are required to synthesise multiple sources of different types of information (such as policy, theory, research, organisational feedback, patient feedback, experience and expertise) to guide their work.
This level 6 module will provide students with the opportunity to explore and evaluate strategies and approaches that can be used to expand their application of knowledge and know-how, making sense of complex information that can be applied within the workplace.
Module learning will draw on comparative analysis of policy and organisational contexts and will facilitate exploration of how these are shaping the development of knowledge and learning within health and social care.
Students will explore a range of relevant and contemporary concepts that surround working within health and social care organisations, including professional supervision, leadership and team working, legal, political and public expectations of health and social care provision.
Topics covered include:
- Key national and international policy contexts e.g. clinical and cost effectiveness; quality and safety in health and social care; patient and public involvement; health and social care integration; technology integration
- The nature of working within changing, interdisciplinary service contexts
- Conceptualisations of knowledge and knowledge generation as applied to health and social care
- Exploration of the credibility and impact of the application of knowledge in health and social care
- Theories and frameworks of learning within individual and organisational contexts
- Reflective practice and workplace staff supervision and support
- The impact of current and emerging ethical debates in health and social care (e.g. end of life care, mental capacity)

The programme is designed to enable individual students to develop graduate, lifelong learning skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and the use of evidence based practice to enhance current professional and academic skills.
It is envisaged that this in turn will develop transferable skills which will enhance the employability of the registered professional overall. Obtaining a degree-level qualification at Bangor University should improve individual career prospects within the candidates’ own countries and relevant international organisations.
Research / Links with external healthcare organisations
Academic staff teaching in this programme have extensive links with the UK National Health Service (NHS), external bodies and other healthcare providers. Academic staff are fully utilised in ensuring that the modules are relevant to the modern healthcare and research environment graduates will enter.
- Students must be registered healthcare professionals in their own country.
- 120 credits at level 5 that have been completed within the past 10 years
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be considered by the programme lead.
- International applicants – IELTS or Trinity ISE tests taken at UK government-approved test centres will be considered as Secure English Language Tests (SELT).
- English language requirement – IELTS 6 with no element below 5.5. Applications must include personal statement
- Where applicants do not meet all the criteria, they may be invited for an interview.
When coming to University, you will have two main costs, Tuition Fees and Living Costs.
There are also some common additional costs that are likely to arise for students on all courses, for example:
- If you choose to study abroad or take the International Experience Year as part of your course.
- If you attend your Graduation Ceremony, there will be a cost for gown hire (£25-£75) and cost for guest tickets (£12 each).
Course-specific additional costs
Depending on the course you are studying, there may be additional course-specific costs that you will be required to meet. These fall into three categories:
- Mandatory Costs: these are related to a particular core or compulsory module that you’ll be required to complete to achieve your qualification e.g. compulsory field trips, uniforms for students on placement, DBS Check.
- Necessarily Incurred Costs: these may not be experienced by all students, and will vary depending on the course e.g. professional body membership, travel to placements, specialist software, personal safety equipment.
- Optional Costs: these depend on your choice of modules or activity and they are shown to give you an indication of the optional costs that may arise to make sure your choice is as informed as possible. These can include graduation events for your course, optional field trips, Welcome Week trips.

Students will need to purchase printing credits for their personal use.
Cost of Accommodation.
Sociable and culturally-educational activities relating to the history and culture of North Wales will be offered to students; it will be their own decision whether to participate in these or not.
All assignments are submitted electronically. The printing and binding of dissertations and thesis applies only to Post Graduate students.
Admissions to the programme are made on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged. Applications are made using Bangor’s online application system.
In order to meet new visa requirements, as well as having the overall IELTS grade the student must have an IELTS 6 (or equivalent) with no less than 5.5 in all areas (speaking, listening, reading, writing).
