Mental Health Practitioners

Walk and Talk

Held by the Students Union, Walk and Talk meets once a month and gives students the oppourtunity to meet new people and walk some beautiful routes around Bangor. For more information please contact undeb@undebbangor.com

Out Mental Health Practitioners form part of the Student Wellbeing Team at the University and they advise on mental health matters and offer guidance regarding the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions. They can assess students presenting possible symptoms of mental illness, or in mental health crisis and undertake watchful waiting or refer to the NHS as required.

All enquiries and bookings should be directed to wellbeingservices@bangor.ac.uk

If you are...

  • worried about your mental health
  • experiencing stress or distress which is affecting your studies
  • concerned about an unexplained change in your (or someone’s else's) behaviour, mood or appearance
  • or a student you know, is struggling to cope with day-to-day activities

If you've answered yes to any of the above then a Mental Health Practitioner may be able to help.

What we do...

  • Help to identify current mental health risks and protective factors for individual students.
  • Provide brief intervention or monitoring, when necessary, to prevent deterioration in mental health.
  • Encourage engagement with other agencies, or clinical interventions, when indicated.
  • Encourage safe, effective self-help strategies, and appropriate levels of informal support, to increase positive health and independence.
  • Discuss strategies, or sources of support, if studying is affecting mental health, and put in place reasonable adjustments to remove barriers and manage the impact of mental health conditions on a student’s experience of university.
  • Liaise with academic and other university staff, student representatives and volunteers, and external agencies, to promote student mental health and wellbeing.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary way for the benefit of individual students.
  • Deliver mental health awareness / first aid training to staff, and provide support to staff who are concerned about the mental health of their tutees.
  • Advise on inclusive provision of teaching, learning, and pastoral support for students at university.

We offer professional mental health support, but it is not our role to provide ongoing therapy or counselling. If you feel you would benefit from seeing a Counsellor, please follow this link to Student Counselling.

Who are we?

Our Mental Health Practitioners are registered with a Professional Body. They are also active participants in the University Mental Health Advisers Network, which aims to share good practice and influence developments across the sector.
