The aim of the module is to give the student a thorough understanding of structure and reactivity of organometallic transition – metal compounds (including those with metal-metal bonds) and their applications in very important catalytic processes.
D L Murphy - 24 lectures The lecture course covers organometallic compounds and compounds. Basic concepts and terminology of organometallic chemistry, 18e Rule; electron counting. Survey of metal ligand bonding. The synthesis and reactions of organometallic compounds - η1-alkyls; η2-carbenes, alkenes, alkynes, η3-allyls, η4-butadienes, η5-pentadienyls, η6-arenes. The important reactions: oxidative insertion, reductive elimination, group migration (insertion), metathesis, dimerization, oligomerization and polymerisation. The focus is on the development of a basic understanding of organometallic ligands to give the ability to understand organometallic compounds in catalysis. The relative importance and value of heterogeneous and homogenous catalysis is studied. Catalytic reactions are selected from: hydroformylation (OXO process), Monsanto acetic acid process, alkene hydrogenations, asymmetric hydrogenations and metathesis reactions.
Threshold (40%). Knowledge and understanding of the content covered in the course is basic; Problems of a routine nature are generally adequately solved; Transferable skills are at a basic level.
Good (~60%). Knowledge base covers all essential aspects of subject matter dealt with in the programme and shows good evidence of enquiry beyond this. Conceptual understanding is good. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved in a logical manner; solutions are generally correct and acceptable. Performance in transferable skills is sound and shows no significant deficiencies.
Excellent (>70%). Knowledge base is extensive and extends well beyond the work covered in the programme. Conceptual understanding is outstanding. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved with efficiency and accuracy; problem-solving procedures are adjusted to the nature of the problem. Performance in transferable skills is generally very good
Students should be able to demonstrate: a working knowledge of the 18-electron rule as applied to organometallic compounds and to be able to correctly state the formal metal oxidation state in metal complexes.
Students should be able to give coherent definitions of the following terms: oxidation addition, reductive elimination, insertion, migration, substitution and metathesis as applied to organometallic reaction mechanisms and to identify key steps in organometallic reaction mechanisms.
Students should be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of catalytic reaction cycles with heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts.
Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of organometalic compunds in nucelophile substituion, cross coupling, cyclisation and metathesis reactions.
