Overview
This module builds on the theoretical and clinical skills developed in year 1. Students will develop skills and an understanding of the importance of the role of the dental hygienist and other members of the dental team in the patient management process including dental implant maintenance and tooth whitening. We will introduce the principles and biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement and the role of the hygienist in orthodontic treatment.
We will look at periodontal disease in greater depth, including specific microbiota, systemic disease and nutrition, occlusion, necrotising disease and mucogingival deformities and the role of antibiotics and surgery in periodontal disease management.
Outline Syllabus:
• The role of the dental hygienist and other members of the dental team in the patient management process including dental implant maintenance and tooth whitening • The principles and biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement and the role of the hygienist in orthodontic treatment • Advanced periodontal disease • Periodontal Disease and Systemic Disease • Nutrition and dental disease • Periodontal Surgery • Periodontal disease and occlusion • Guided Biofilm Therapy • Necrotising periodontal disease • Periodontitis as manifestation of systemic disease • Periodontal/endodontic abscesses • Mucogingival deformities
Assessment Strategy
This module is assessed using the Percentage Grade Scale as follows:
70% Distinction 60-69% Merit 40-59% Pass <40% Fail
All elements of assessment must be passed at the minimum 40% threshold to pass the module. Students who do not meet the minimum threshold of 40% will be given one reassessment attempt.
The module is assessed though a written examination consisting of multiple choice (MCQs) and short answer questions (SAQs). Additionally, students will undertake a final clinical examination by means of 2 x unseen case examinations. These unseen cases assess the student's knowledge and competency in assessing patient medical, dental and social history, evaluating radiographs and clinical indices, diagnosing dental disease and treatment planning. Each unseen case must be passed at the 40% minimum threshold. Additionally, as this is an examination to determine clinical knowledge, understanding and competency a in order to be allowed to sit the final unseen case examinations, students must be able to demonstrate they have undertaken sufficient clinical procedures (within 25% of the cohort average). This data is collected through the completion of the Clinical Practice 2 Portfolio. Regardless of the overall module score, failure to pass any individual assessment component will result in the student being unable to progress in the programme.
The Clinical Practice 2 Portfolio is a Pass/Fail assessment and details all clinical procedures undertaken and includes written reflections for various procedures. Both the clinical procedure logs and the written reflections must be completed and confirmed and signed by the Clinical Supervisors to pass this assessment.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically evaluate and apply evidence-based knowledge necessary for the provision of advanced periodontal treatment including the maintenance of dental implants and the safe provision of tooth whitening.
- Define the principles of orthodontics and the biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement and force control and critically appraise the dental hygienists’ role in the management of patients undergoing orthodontic therapy.
- Demonstrate appropriate patient assessment, care and management with critical evaluation of materials used, treatment modalities and pain management techniques.
- Differentiate between periodontal diseases and other diseases affecting the periodontium.

Description
Paediatric Prevention and Periodontal Unseen cases Students will undertake a final clinical examination by means of 2 x unseen case examinations; one periodontal case and one prevention case. These unseen cases assess the student's knowledge and competency in assessing patient medical, dental and social history, evaluating radiographs and clinical indices, diagnosing dental disease and treatment planning. Each unseen case must be passed at the 40% minimum threshold. Additionally, as this is an assessment to determine clinical knowledge, understanding and competency a in order to be allowed to sit the final unseen case examinations, students must be able to demonstrate they have undertaken sufficient clinical procedures (within 25% of the cohort average).
