Students will learn the theory underpinning clinical practice.
Learning content will include: •Comprehensive treatment planning •Decontamination and the sterilisation for dental instruments •Classification and diagnosis of dental caries and periodontal disease •Aetiology and pathology of dental caries and periodontal diseases •Monitoring periodontal disease •Oral Hygiene education and instruction •Take an alginate impression of a dentate mouth •Prevention of dental and oral diseases including the provision of fissure sealants and fluoride varnish in line with the Evidence Based Toolkit •Temporary restorations and temporarily re-cementing crowns •Effective dental instrumentation in the treatment and management of periodontal disease •Management of dentine sensitivity •Local anaesthesia – anatomy and the effective administration relief using local anaesthesia •The morphology of permanent and deciduous teeth and roots, dental charting to identify teeth and caries •Toothwear •Dental Materials •Overview of crowns, bridges, inlays and prostheses
Students are required to complete a clinical skills portfolio, accompanied by reflections of these activities in clinical placement

Assessment Strategy
This module is assessed via a written examination consisting of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and short answer questions (SAQs) and is graded using the Percentage Grade Scale; the grades awarded are as follows:
Graded Percentage
70% Distinction Excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and the outcomes being assessed.
60-69% Merit A very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and the outcomes being assessed.
40-59% Pass <40% Fail
All elements of assessment must be passed at the minimum 40% threshold to pass the module. Students who fail to meet the 40% threshold to pass the assessment will be given one further reassessment attempt.
Students must also complete the Clinical Portfolio to pass this module; this is not a graded assessment and students are awarded a Pass/Fail. To successfully complete the Portfolio students must complete all the required components of the portfolio, including reflections and clinical competencies. All of which must be signed as complete by your clinical supervisors.
Regardless of the overall module score, failure to pass any individual assessment component will result in the student being unable to progress in the programme.
A detailed marking rubric will be provided to students
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology, pathology and progression and management of periodontal disease, toothwear and dental caries.
- Demonstrate competency to undertake the removal of hard and soft deposits from tooth structure and stains using a range of methods following appropriate history taking, examination and treatment planning
- Demonstrate knowledge of the properties of local anaesthesia and associated nerve supply and apply this knowledge in the effective anaesthesia of dental patients.
- Demonstrate understanding of the importance of oral health education and instruction according to the Evidence Based Toolkit, demonstrating effective delivery of patient appropriate advice and intervention including fluoride varnish and fissure sealant application, demonstrating effective moisture control.
- Describe the morphology of the permanent and deciduous dentition and apply the basic principles of dental diseases and the factors influencing their prevention and management.
- Describe the properties and uses of a range of dental materials employed in dental practice including restoratives, temporary cements and impression materials. Demonstrate taking an alginate impression of a dentate mouth.
