Overview
The module provides guidance on literature searching, critical analysis, writing a literature review, and making poster and oral presentations. More detailed instruction, guidance and discussion will take place through tutor group meetings and workshop sessions. These aspects will be developed in relation to examples and research from within the field of physical oceanography and modelling.
As part of the module, English language support will be provided in the form of relevant workshops coordinated by the English Language Centre for Overseas Students (ELCOS), in conjunction with academic staff from the School of Ocean Sciences

Assessment Strategy
Threshold - (D minus grade) A basic review of the literature pertinent to the topic of research presented (a) as a rudimentary but competent written essay and (b) as an adequate oral presentation
Good - (B grade) A thorough review of the literature pertinent to the topic of research presented (a) as a detailed, tabulated and/or illustrated essay showing clear understanding of the topic and the research questions posed and (b) as a strong, confident oral presentation.
Excellent - (A grade) An expansive review of the literature pertinent to the topic of research presented (a) as a highly creative, insightful, carefully argued, tabulated and/or illustrated essay and (b) as a riveting, entertaining, tightly argued oral presentation
Learning Outcomes
- On successful completion, students will have demonstrated an ability to effectively present and discuss their ocean sciences-related research findings in an oral presentation using appropriate audio-visual technological aids.
- On successful completion, students will have demonstrated that they have the ability to search for and retrieve published information - with specific relation to subject areas with ocean sciences. (This may be indirectly so, in the form of their reference lists for their research output.)
- On successful completion, students will have shown that they can critically read, assimilate, review and synthesise selected published information relevant to their chosen topic from within the general field of ocean science.
- On successful completion, students will have shown that they can effectively and competently present their findings in written form using tabulation, illustration and correct referencing methodology - with specific relation to subject areas with ocean sciences.
