This module introduces students to psychopathology, by systematically examining the history, classification, causes and treatment of psychological disorders. The module takes an integrative approach and critically examines the contribution of psychological, biological and sociocultural determinants of mental illness.

The module begins by considering the historical context of mental illness and the development of the diagnostic classification system (DSM-5) before considering in detail several mental disorders as characterised by the DSM-5.

  2. Define and identify the major psychopathological disorders as classified by the DSM-V

  3. Think critically regarding the biological, sociocultural and psychological perspectives of psychopathological disorders, and apply evidence based knowledge in conceptualising the causes and treatment of these disorders.

  4. Understand the key concepts and issues associated with the current approach to the classification of psychopathological disorders.

  5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the major psychopathological disorders and their treatments.

  6. Demonstrate written communication skills appropriate for the discussion of psychopathology.
