Overview

Module Content Within this module Associate Teachers will develop their understanding of the areas of languages, literacy and communication, aspects of expressive arts. This module address the foundation concepts in each of the areas from which Associate Teachers will build in further modules

Module content: An introduction to the area of learning and experience for, languages, literacy and communication: - Exploring the impact of societal factors on communication development. - Introduction to language acquisition theories. - Identify key concepts in early, languages, literacy and communication, including subject-specific research-informed pedagogical content knowledge, covered through this module could include: - Speaking; - Reading; - Writing.

An introduction to the area of learning and experience for expressive arts - Exploring attitudes to expressive arts and personal development within these fields; - Identifying key concepts in expressive arts and developing research-informed pedagogical content knowledge based on the following areas of expressive arts: Music Art Drama

The four purposes of the curriculum areas will be embedded throughout the module: Developing children as: - Ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives; - Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work; - Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world; - Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

Research Methods and Methodology

Research informed delivery and research-based teaching:

Evidence-based and research-informed learning underpins the content and the delivery of this module and will be presented in a way that communicates how theory and practice are blended. In this module we will present, introduce and describe clearly the strengths and weaknesses of evidence in the latest theory and evidence based practice that underpins the pedagogy and classroom practices covered. The content and delivery of the module will introduce students to the importance of them developing their capacity to be consumers and producers of research and developing their knowledge of the spectrum of research that informs teaching practice.

Module Content

Within this module Associate Teachers will develop their understanding of the areas of languages, literacy and communication, aspects of expressive arts, and develop their own personal skills in the use of the Welsh language. This module address the foundation concepts in each of the areas from which Associate Teachers will build in further modules

Module content: An introduction to the area of learning and experience for, languages, literacy and communication: - Exploring the impact of societal factors on communication development. - Introduction to language acquisition theories. - Identify key concepts in early, languages, literacy and communication, including subject-specific research-informed pedagogical content knowledge, covered through this module could include: Speaking Reading Writing.

Introduction to promoting Welsh and the Curriculum Cymreig within the cross curricular areas and themed approaches;

An introduction to the area of learning and experience for expressive arts.

Exploring attitudes to expressive arts and personal development within these fields;

  • Identifying key concepts in expressive arts and developing research-informed pedagogical content knowledge based on the following areas of expressive arts: Music Art Drama

A- (Excellent) Comprehensive understanding of the link between music, role play and language development. All strategies are consistent with excellent early years practice as identified in course literature. The nursery rhyme and all support materials are appropriate to the context and the target language. Rhythm, rhyme and role playing are clearly planned and all aspects are linked to the development of oracy. Extensive range of reading including theory, practice, and policy; all readings are valid.

B- (Very Good) A very good understanding of the link between music, role play and language development; some minor points may be neglected. Most strategies are consistent with best early years practice as identified in course literature. The nursery rhyme and most support materials are appropriate to the context and the target language. Rhythm, rhyme and role playing are clearly planned and most aspects linked to the development of oracy; some aspects may not be explicitly linked. A very good range of reading including theory, practice, and policy with some omissions; most readings are valid.

C (Good) A good understanding of the link between music, role play and language development; some key literature has been omitted Most strategies are consistent with best early years practice but may not be linked to literature. The nursery rhyme and some support materials are appropriate to the context and the target language. Rhythm, rhyme and role playing are included in the lesson plan and some aspects are linked to the development of oracy; some aspects may unclear. Good range of reading including theory, practice, and policy with some omissions; the reading may include unreliable sources such as blogs or media outlets.

D- (Satisfactory) Some understanding of the link between music, role play and language development; key literature has been omitted. Some strategies are consistent with best early years practice but are not clearly linked to literature. The nursery rhyme, some support materials and the target language are mostly appropriate; at least one of these areas needs more detail Rhythm, rhyme and role playing are included in the lesson plan but links with language development are unclear. The reading includes at least two of the following: theory, practice, and policy; the reading include unreliable sources such as blogs or media outlets.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate awareness and comprehension of researched-informed subject-specific pedagogies, related curriculum content and professional knowledge and understanding for the effective teaching of expressive arts communication, language and literacy.

  • Explain clearly the importance of developing secure subject knowledge to enable effective teaching and learning.

  • Identify ways in which the cross-curricular responsibilities of literacy can be embedded within the curriculum.

Plan learning activity demonstrating knowledge of cross-curricular approach. * Critically discuss the relationship between music and rhythm and language development for children in the early years. * Create a lesson plan for an appropriate acivity to deliver to a small group (6-8) of early years children. * Collate or produce the resources to deliver this session.
